In a significant endorsement ahead of India's five-match Test series against England, starting June 20, bowling coach Morne Morkel has urged all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy to embrace greater bowling responsibilities. Morkel believes Reddy's "magical" bowling spells could be pivotal in the series.
Reddy, 21, has been vying for the seam-bowling all-rounder's spot alongside Shardul Thakur. While Thakur brings experience with 11 Test appearances, Reddy's adaptability in English conditions has caught the selectors' attention. Earlier this year, he bowled 26.5 overs across two unofficial Tests against the England Lions, showcasing his potential.
Morkel emphasized the need for Reddy to enhance his bowling consistency, stating, "I think he is skillful. He is a guy who can bowl that magical ball." He added, "I've had conversations with him where I've challenged him to bowl a bit more. I want to see the ball more in his hands."
The coach also highlighted the importance of team balance, noting, "In terms of the balance, we're very happy with that. But for us as a bowling unit, finding that gear that we're going to need in Test matches is going to be important."
Reddy's recent performances bolster his case. He scored an impressive century in the 2024-25 Boxing Day Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, underscoring his batting prowess.
As the series approaches, all eyes will be on Reddy to see if he can rise to Morkel's challenge and solidify his role as a key contributor to India's bowling attack.
