A cat nicknamed Klepto Kitty because of his tendency to swipe items from gardens he scours in his neighbourhood is to lead Redwood City's annual pet parade in May.

Dusty the cat will be the guest of honour at the fundraising event for the Peninsula Humane Society.

By day, Dusty lazes around like your everyday housecat, but at night he turns into a prolific cat burglar in the California town of San Mateo.

He has been on a stealing spree for the last three years, and has managed to pick up at least 600 items.

But his neighbours don’t seem to mind – as soon as they realise an item has been stolen they just go over to Dusty's house and reclaim what's rightfully theirs.

Owners Jim Coleman and Jean Chu will auction unclaimed items which have been taken by their cat, the proceeds of which will go to the society.

Parade organisers have dubbed the cat 'a celebrity' and are 'so excited' to secure Dusty's services.

Dusty's owners say his record haul is 11 items in one night, with socks, shoes and toys being popular finds for him.

The parade will take place on May 21.

A cat nicknamed Klepto Kitty steals the spotlight at Redwood City's annual pet parade
Klepto Kitty, otherwise known as Dusty the cat, is set to be the guest of honor at the upcoming fundraising event for the Peninsula Humane Society. This interesting character has made headlines due to his impressive feline thievery streak, having allegedly swiped around 600 items from gardens in his San Mateo neighborhood over the past three years.
Dusty lives a typical cat life by day, but transforms into a prolific little burglar by night. His owners, Jim Coleman and Jean Chu, have indicated that once neighbors realize that items have gone missing, they often come by to reclaim their belongings from Dusty’s stash. This adorable mischief has created a light-hearted community dynamic in San Mateo, where his antics are met with smiles rather than anger.
The couple plans to auction off the unclaimed items taken by Dusty, with all proceeds donated to the Peninsula Humane Society, highlighting the positive impact his unique hobby has had on the local community. Parade organizers describe Dusty as a 'celebrity', expressing their excitement about including him in the event, which is scheduled for May 21.
Dusty’s escapades include record-breaking nights where he has brought home as many as 11 items, with socks, toys, and shoes being frequent finds.
