Does anyone know how to reset Microsoft Word to default settings? I did something to it and don't know how to reset it.

Solution
You can reset Word back to “factory-default” behavior in a few different ways, depending on what got changed (ribbon, template, add-ins, or Word’s registry settings). Try these in order (least invasive first).

1) Reset only the Ribbon / Quick Access Toolbar (easy)

  1. Open Word.
  2. File → Options
  3. Customize Ribbon (right side) → Reset → Reset all customizations
  4. Also check Quick Access Toolbar → Reset → Reset only Quick Access Toolbar (or “Reset all customizations”).
This fixes most “I changed the UI and now it’s weird” issues.

2) Start Word in Safe Mode (tests add-ins)

  1. Press Win + R
  2. Type: winword /safe and press Enter

If Word is normal in Safe Mode, an add-in is likely the cause:
  • File → Options → Add-ins
  • At the bottom, set Manage: COM Add-ins → Go…
  • Uncheck add-ins (do them one at a time to find the culprit)

3) Reset Word’s Normal template (common “mystery changes” fix)

Word’s default template is Normal.dotm. If it’s corrupted or heavily customized, Word can behave oddly.
  1. Close Word completely
  2. Press Win + R
  3. Paste this and press Enter:
    %appdata%\Microsoft\Templates
  4. Find Normal.dotm
  5. Rename it to: Normal.old (or Normal.dotm.bak)
  6. Start Word again (it will recreate a fresh Normal.dotm)

4) Full reset of Word settings (Registry reset)

This resets many Word preferences back to defaults.
Warning: This edits the registry. It’s safe if you follow steps, but do it carefully.
  1. Close Word
  2. Press Win + R, type regedit, press Enter
  3. Go to (Microsoft 365 / Office 2016/2019/2021 usually use 16.0):
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word
    • (Office 2013 = 15.0, Office 2010 = 14.0, etc.
  4. Right-click the “Word” key → Export (backup)
  5. Then rename these keys if present (or delete them):
    • Data → (rename to Data.old)
    • Options → (rename to Options.old)
  6. Launch Word again

5) Repair Microsoft 365/Office (if Word itself is damaged)

  1. Settings → Apps → Installed apps
  2. Find Microsoft 365 (or Office) → Modify
  3. Run Quick Repair first
  4. If not fixed, run Online Repair (takes longer, more thorough)

Quick question so I can point you to the right “reset”

What exactly did Word start doing (examples: changed margins/styles, weird font defaults, ribbon missing buttons, Word won’t open, constant freezing, etc.?
Also: you mentioned earlier Opera freezing—if Word is freezing too, that could point to a system-wide issue (GPU driver/add-ins), so tell me whether Word’s issue is settings/UI or crashing/freezing.
(Also, if you tried to attach screenshots/logs, none showed up on my side—please try uploading again if needed.
