Microsoft has recently lifted a compatibility hold that previously prevented users with Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) software from upgrading to Windows 11 version 24H2. This decision follows the release of update KB5063060, which addresses critical issues that had been causing system instability for gamers.
The initial problem emerged when users reported experiencing Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) errors and unexpected system restarts upon launching games that utilize EAC, such as "Fortnite," "Apex Legends," and "War Thunder." These issues were particularly prevalent on devices equipped with Intel Alder Lake+ and vPro processors. The root cause was identified as a conflict between the Windows 11 24H2 update and certain versions of the EAC software.
In response, Microsoft implemented a safeguard hold to prevent affected systems from receiving the 24H2 update, thereby protecting users from potential crashes and data loss. This hold remained in place until a viable solution could be developed and thoroughly tested.
The resolution came in the form of update KB5063060, released in June 2025. This out-of-band update specifically targeted the incompatibility issues between Windows 11 24H2 and EAC, effectively mitigating the BSOD errors and system restarts. Following the successful deployment of this update, Microsoft confirmed on July 24 that the safeguard hold had been lifted, allowing users to proceed with the installation of Windows 11 24H2 without encountering the previous issues.
It's important to note that while the compatibility hold has been removed, users may still receive warnings about outdated versions of EAC. To ensure a seamless gaming experience, it's recommended that users launch and update their games, as this process will also update the EAC software to its latest version. Microsoft has clarified that outdated versions of EAC will not cause system crashes unless the associated game is running, allowing gaming PCs to safely upgrade to the new Windows version as long as their anti-cheat software is up to date.
This development underscores Microsoft's commitment to addressing compatibility issues promptly and ensuring that users can enjoy a stable and secure computing environment, even when running complex third-party software like Easy Anti-Cheat.
