Microsoft's OneDrive for Mac is set to introduce support for syncing to removable external drives, a feature that has been highly anticipated by users seeking more flexible storage solutions. This development follows the earlier addition of support for non-removable external drives, marking a significant enhancement in OneDrive's functionality on macOS.
OneDrive serves as Microsoft's cloud storage platform, enabling users to synchronize files across various devices. Storage capacity is included with Microsoft 365 subscriptions, with the amount varying based on the specific plan. The forthcoming feature will allow users to sync their OneDrive files directly to removable external drives, such as USB flash drives or portable hard drives. When the drive is connected, files will sync as they would with any other supported drive. If the drive is disconnected, syncing will pause and resume automatically upon reconnection and restarting OneDrive.
Currently, this feature is in the testing phase among Insiders. To utilize this functionality, users must meet the following requirements:
- Running macOS 15.0 or later.
- Using OneDrive build 25.097 or later.
- The external drive must be:
- Formatted with the APFS file system.
- Protected by FileVault encryption.
- Not set to read-only, not a network drive, and not marked as quarantined by macOS.
Microsoft is actively seeking feedback on this feature. Users can share their experiences and suggestions by clicking the gear icon in the macOS menu bar and selecting "Send Feedback." As of now, Microsoft has not provided a specific timeline for the broader rollout of this syncing feature.
This enhancement addresses a longstanding request from the Mac user community, aiming to provide more versatile storage options and improve the overall user experience with OneDrive on macOS.
