A cat trapped under the floorboards of a renovated house in Somerset survived for five weeks by licking the condensation off water pipes.

Twinkle used to be chubby, until she slipped under the floor while workmen fitted a new central heating system in her house.

The nine-year-old tabby was assumed to have been rehomed after her elderly owner Wilfred Paull was taken into care.

The RSPCA found her only when Karen Platt moved in and heard scratching and whining.

‘I was nearly in tears when she was pulled out. She looked so sad and thin,’ the 39-year-old said.

Twinkle, renamed lucky after her recent ordeal, is well and living with neighbours in Ilminster, Somerset.

RSPCA animal welfare officer Alison Sparkes said: 'Lucky was a portly moggy before she got stuck, which is probably how she managed to live without food and water for so long.'

Karen believes Lucky is a miracle cat: 'Her new name is very apt' she said.
