I am using Vista Home Basic.
I mapped the network sharing folder into the drive, like H:.
I also defined the different user name and password and checked "Reconnect at logon" option.
But next time when I reboot the system, the mapping changed to "disconnedted" with X-mark and I double-click it to enter again the user name and password.
Is there any way to save the user name and password and to have the mapping work even after rebooting?

Solution
In Windows Vista, and generally in Windows operating systems, you can store the credentials for network locations to ensure that mapped network drives are reconnected automatically after a reboot without needing to re-enter the username and password every time. Here's how you can save the username and password for a mapped network drive in Windows Vista:

Saving Credentials for Mapped Network Drives in Windows Vista:

  1. Use Credential Manager:
    • Go to Control Panel.
    • Click on User Accounts.
    • Select Credential Manager.
    • Click on Add a Windows Credential.
    • Enter the network address, username, and password for the network location.
    • Click OK to save the credentials.

    []Re-map Network Drive:
    • Disconnect the mapped network drive if it's currently connected.
    • Re-map the network drive using the stored credentials:
      • Open Computer.
      • Click on Map Network Drive.
      • Enter the folder and drive letter.
      • Check the box for Reconnect at logon.
      • Click Finish.

    ]Enable Reconnect at Logon:
    • When mapping the drive, ensure you check the Reconnect at logon option to make sure it reconnects automatically at startup.
  2. Disable UAC Prompt for Network Drive Credentials:
    • You can disable the User Account Control (UAC) requirement that prompts for network credentials. This can prevent issues with the drive mapping.
    • Go to Control Panel > User Accounts > User Account Control Settings.
    • Lower the setting to Never notify.

      Additional Tips:

      • Ensure the Workstation Service is running.
      • Check for any group policy settings that might prevent the saving of network credentials.
By following these steps and saving your network credentials in the Credential Manager, you should be able to automatically reconnect to your mapped network drive on startup without needing to enter the username and password each time.
