I have been using Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit for an year now, and recently noticed that the "Currently Allocated" virtual memoy is 3063 Mb, while the "Recommended" VM is 4594 Mb. I have 3 Gb physical memory installed. Even after I check the "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives" option, the VM remains 3063 Mb. What should be the optimal VM setting in Win'7 for me to derive the best performance from my PC ? Please advise. Thanks.

In Windows systems, virtual memory, also known as the page file, is a portion of your hard drive used as if it were RAM. This helps your system handle more applications than it could otherwise. Here are some guidelines on optimizing virtual memory settings in Windows 7 based on your system specifications:

Optimal Virtual Memory Settings:

  1. Rule of Thumb:
    • The general rule is to set the initial size of the virtual memory (page file) to be 1.5 times your physical RAM size and set the maximum size to be 3 times your physical RAM size.
    []Calculate Virtual Memory Size:
    • Given you have 3 GB of physical memory (RAM), the recommended virtual memory size can be calculated as follows:

      • Initial Size: 1.5 * 3 GB = 4.5 GB
      • Maximum Size: 3 * 3 GB = 9 GB

    ]Adjusting Virtual Memory Settings:
    • To adjust your virtual memory settings in Windows 7:
      • Right-click on "Computer" or "This PC" and select "Properties."
      • Click on "Advanced system settings" on the left side.
      • Under the "Advanced" tab, click on the "Settings" button under the Performance section.
      • Again under the "Advanced" tab, click on the "Change" button under the Virtual Memory section.
      • Uncheck the "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives" option.
      • Select the drive where you want to adjust the paging file size (usually the C: drive).
      • Choose the "Custom size" option and set the initial size and maximum size based on the calculations above.
      • Click "Set" and then "OK" to apply the changes.
    []Optimize for Best Performance:
    • After making these changes, restart your computer to apply the new virtual memory settings.

    ]Monitoring Performance:
    • Keep an eye on your system's performance after adjusting the virtual memory settings to ensure that it is optimized for your usage. By following these steps and adjusting your virtual memory settings accordingly, you should be able to derive better performance from your PC by allowing Windows to utilize virtual memory effectively.
