Microsoft Enhances Windows 10 Version 22H2 with Smaller Update Packages

  • Thread Author
In a recent update by Microsoft, there's a notable focus on optimizing the monthly LCU (Latest Cumulative Update) package size for Windows 10, version 22H2. This particular move aims to enhance efficiency and reduce network bandwidth consumption for users, especially those on slower networks.

Efficiency Boost for Windows 10 Users

For Windows 10 users, the regular security and quality updates can sometimes be demanding on network bandwidth. To address this challenge, Microsoft has decided to take inspiration from Windows 11 by implementing more streamlined packaging for updates. An example of this optimization is the removal of reverse differentials from the cumulative update package which has proven to be successful in enhancing efficiency on Windows 11.

Extending the Optimization to Windows 10, version 22H2

This efficiency enhancement is now being extended to Windows 10, version 22H2. By decreasing the size of the monthly LCU package, users can expect benefits such as reduced bandwidth usage, faster downloads, minimized network traffic, and improved performance, particularly on slower connections. This improvement is set to be rolled out starting with the April 23, 2024 optional non-security preview release.

Impact on Update Package Size

Devices running Windows 10, version 22H2 will witness a reduction in the update package size. The April 9, 2024 monthly security update, for instance, had an update package size of 830 MB, which is expected to decrease to approximately 650 MB for the April 23, 2024 optional non-security preview release. This reduction in size translates to a smoother and more efficient downloading and installation process for users.

Seamless Transition for Users

Whether managing updates through Windows Update, Windows Update for Business, Windows Autopatch, Windows Server Update Service (WSUS), or Configuration Manager, the transition to the optimized update package size will be seamless for Windows 10, version 22H2 devices. Users can continue to approve and install LCUs for their devices as usual, now benefitting from the decreased package size.

Important Note for System Administrators

An essential point to note is for system administrators who handle Windows 10, version 22H2 installation media. If the media has not been updated since July 25, 2023, it is recommended to apply the October 10, 2023 special standalone servicing stack update before proceeding with the April 23, 2024, or later cumulative update.
