This is a problem i've noticed since I installed Windows 7, none of the settings I change for any of my programs are being saved, for instance when I set up Opera to be my main web browser it will reset as soon as I close it, and keep asking me if I want to set it as my main browser, this goes for other programs as well, game settings will reset when they close, and my microphone volume will reset to midlevel after I had set it to max earlier.

Anyone have any idea what the problem might be or what solutions I might try?

Thanks

Solution
When settings are not being saved in Windows 7 for various programs and applications, including changes to default programs, game settings, and microphone volume, it can be frustrating. This issue could be caused by several factors, and there are a few solutions you can try to resolve this problem:

Potential Causes:

  1. Permissions Issue:
    • Check the permissions on the folders where the settings are saved. If the user account doesn't have the correct permissions, changes may not be saved.
    []Corrupted User Profile:
    • A corrupted user profile can cause issues with saving settings. Creating a new user profile might resolve this.

    ]Registry Errors:
    • Issues in the Windows Registry can prevent settings from being saved properly. Running a registry cleaner or fixing registry errors manually might help.

      Solutions to Try:

[]Check User Account Control (UAC) Settings:
    • Ensure that User Account Control settings are not set too high, as this can sometimes prevent changes from being saved.
    [
    ]Run Programs as Administrator:
    • Try running the programs that are not saving settings as an administrator. Right-click on the program icon and select "Run as administrator."
    []Check Antivirus Software:
    • Antivirus programs can sometimes interfere with settings. Temporarily disable antivirus software to see if it resolves the issue.
    [
    ]Check Disk for Errors:
    • Use the built-in Windows tool to check the disk for errors. Corrupted sectors on the disk can lead to issues with saving data.
    []Create a New User Profile:
    • Create a new user profile and see if the issue persists there. If not, the original user profile may be corrupted.
    [
    ]Reset Windows Settings:
    • Use the System Restore feature to revert Windows settings to a point where settings were being saved correctly.
  2. Backup and Reinstall Programs:
    • Backup your data and reinstall the programs that are not saving settings properly. This can sometimes resolve program-specific issues.

      Note:

Before making any significant changes, it's essential to back up your important data to prevent any data loss during troubleshooting steps.
