I have a laptop running Vista and my husband's pc runs Windows 7. We can access the files on the laptop from the pc but get 'access denied' if we try to access files on the pc from the laptop. We appear to have all the same network and sharing settings so what do we need to do?

Solution
To address the issue of "access denied" when trying to access files on the Windows 7 PC from the Windows Vista laptop, you need to ensure that the sharing and permissions settings are correctly configured on both machines. Here's a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and resolve this file sharing problem:

Troubleshooting Steps for File Sharing between Windows Vista and Windows 7:

      • Under Change advanced sharing settings, enable Network discovery and File sharing.
    []Shared Folders and Permissions:
    • Ensure that the folders you want to share on the Windows 7 PC have appropriate sharing permissions set:
      • Right-click on the folder you want to share, select Properties > Sharing > Advanced Sharing.
      • Check if the folder is shared, and click on Permissions to set desired permissions for everyone or specific users.

    ]Network Credentials:
    • Consider setting up identical user accounts with the same passwords on both machines:
      • Go to Control Panel > User Accounts and ensure the same user exists on both machines with the same password.
    []Firewall and Antivirus Settings:
    • Temporarily disable the firewall and antivirus software on both machines to check if they are blocking file sharing. If the issue resolves, adjust their settings to allow file sharing.
    [
    ]Access Shared Folders:
    • On the Windows Vista laptop, try accessing the shared folders on the Windows 7 PC by:
      • Press Win + R, then type \\ and press Enter.
        • You should see a list of shared folders. Try accessing them and see if the "access denied" issue persists.
    • Advanced Sharing Settings:
      • Check the advanced sharing settings on Windows 7 to ensure that password-protected sharing is turned off if you're not prompted for a username/password when accessing shared folders. By following these steps and ensuring that both machines have appropriate sharing settings, permissions, and network configurations, you should be able to successfully share files between your Windows Vista laptop and Windows 7 PC without encountering "access denied" errors. If the issue persists, let me know for further assistance.
