'SIM Swapping’ Victim Sees Over $200K Stolen From Bank Account
In a shocking new report, the phenomenon of "SIM swapping" has emerged as one of the fastest-growing scams worldwide, leading to significant financial losses for unsuspecting victims. This scam involves hackers gaining access to a victim's mobile phone number and using it to hijack their bank accounts, leaving victims in a state of financial turmoil.
The video features personal accounts from two women, Jackie Berman and Heidi Diamond, who lost substantial sums—including Berman’s life savings of $26,000 and Diamond's staggering $200,000, all taken from her Citibank savings account. The process starts when scammers collect enough personal information to convince a mobile carrier to transfer the victim's phone number to a new SIM card controlled by the hacker. Once in control of the phone number, the scammer can easily reset passwords and transfer funds without the victim's consent.
Inside Edition, the program covering this investigation, highlights that even after contacting Citibank, Berman is still struggling to recover her funds. Despite reporting the fraud, she claims that Citibank denied her attempts for reimbursement five times. In contrast, Diamond's funds were returned only after media coverage prompted the bank to take action.
This case underscores the critical importance of safeguarding personal information and understanding how to protect oneself from such scams.
For those interested in protecting their accounts, the video suggests further resources on methods to secure both mobile devices and banking information. With the rise of digital banking, being vigilant about security practices is more crucial than ever.
