There was a joke doing the rounds at the time when the one Pound coin was first minted to replace the English Pound note. The coin was reminiscent of the old English Sovereign and the joke went, "Why is the One Pound coin like Margaret Thatcher?" Answer - "Because it's bold and brassy and thinks it's a sovereign!"
