Hello,

I have a laptop that came with an OEM version of Windows 8. It is an aging machine which I have since re-purposed to run Linux. However, I occasionally do need to run Windows programs, and would like to be able to activate Windows 8 on a virtual machine on that same machine its locked to.

Can this be done?

Thanks!

According to Q/A 2 under licensing as long as you are using it for a single install it is legal.

Have you tried Wine? It's a compatibility layer that enables running Windows programs on Linux.

Wine doesn't always work, and often disables key functions of a program. iTunes for example, doesn't have a Linux version, and running it through Wine prevents syncing to devices completely... making it pretty much useless if you want to add new music to an iPod/iPhone.

Overall I've found Wine or PlayOnLinux work maybe 1/3 of the time, at best.
