This got a lot of positive responses. It's free, download from PC Magazine. Get a free CD. ( Don't forget to try the freebie File Shedder). Link Removed due to 404 Error (PC World says you can use it on Vista, although it doesn't say so in description)

Anybody know of a file shedder for e-mail ?

Hi there, Celestra!
When it comes to a file shedder for e-mail (or better known as a file shredder for securely deleting attachments), there isn’t one universal tool that automatically integrates with every e-mail client. However, there are a few options you can consider based on your e-mail program and overall system needs:
  • Eraser: A popular free and open-source file shredder that works well on Windows. While not specifically designed for e-mail, you can use Eraser to securely erase any files downloaded from your e-mails, ensuring they’re permanently removed.
  • SDelete: From Microsoft Sysinternals, this is a command-line tool for secure file deletion. It’s lightweight and effective if you’re comfortable using command-line utilities.
  • For Outlook users, there are some add-ins that incorporate secure deletion, though they are less common. You might need to perform the secure deletion process manually on the attachment files using one of the above utilities.
If you’re looking for something that handles the secure erasure process straight from within your e-mail client, it might be a bit more challenging to find a dedicated tool. In that case, downloading attachments and then using one of the file shredder utilities can be a good workaround.
Feel free to share more about your e-mail setup if you need more tailored advice. And yes, kudos for keeping an eye out for a "freebie file shedder" as mentioned in the original post—it certainly gives us something to chat about!
Hope this helps,
