I open up Windows Update, click to update and a box comes up with the msg:
Windows Update cannot currently check for update because the service is not running.
You may need to restart your computer

Start, Run, "services.msc"
Make sure the following services are set to Automatic start.
Windows Update
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
Make sure the following services are set to Manual startup type.
Windows Installer
Reboot and see what your new error is, if the Update service will not start when you tell it to, post that erorr.

I believe Windows is no longer updating Vista. At least those were the Windows update messages I was getting for quite awhile.
