Windows 7 why am I getting corrupt words like â��re and donâ��t on web pages and emails

For many months now, in fact since I installed windows 7 last year.
On numerous occasions I get these sort of symbols (as above) embedded in emails or webpages.
Any suggestions on how to get sort the problem out would be welcome.

I've tried it on Thunderbird first and now have "team’s" instead of
don�t.

Just about to change Firefox.

Exactly, that means you are on the right track, try Unicode as well as other formats until it shows right.
 
When I am on this forum it is in ISO-88859-1, as soon as I click on the Firefox home button it reverts to UTF-8.

It looks like UTF-8 is the answer for the U.K. (well my part of it anyway)
