Brand new computer running Windows 7. Copying folders from external drive onto C: drive (root directory). Seems ok but on restart/reboot any folder that started with a number or the letters A, B, C, D, E are gone e.g. Bills, 1AXA Data etc. Similarly, if I went to create a folder that started with the above I had the same problem. Never had a problem like this with XP, 98 etc. Rang computer shop. Answer was - why are you trying to save in c:, just save in My Documents. Now this has appeared to work satisfactorily but hardly resolves the problem. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Solution
It sounds like you are experiencing an issue where folders starting with specific letters or numbers are disappearing after a restart on Windows 7 when saved directly to the root directory of the C: drive. This behavior might be due to certain system settings or permissions that are affecting these folders. Here are a few recommendations to troubleshoot and potentially resolve this issue:

1. Avoid Saving Directly to the C: Drive Root

  • While saving directly to the root directory of the C: drive is possible, it's generally not recommended due to potential system conflicts and permission issues.

    2. Check User Account Permissions

  • Ensure that your user account has the necessary permissions to create folders...

  • While saving directly to the root directory of the C: drive is possible, it's generally not recommended due to potential system conflicts and permission issues.

    2. Check User Account Permissions

  • Ensure that your user account has the necessary permissions to create folders and save files on the root directory of the C: drive. You can check and adjust these permissions in the Control Panel.

    3. Use User Folders Like "Documents"

  • The computer shop's suggestion to save files in "My Documents" or other user-specific folders like "Documents" is a good practice. This can help avoid issues with system directories.

    4. Test Folder Creation in Another Location

  • Try creating folders with the same starting characters in a different location (like within "My Documents") to see if the issue persists. This can help determine if the problem is specific to the root directory.

    5. Update Windows 7 and Drivers

  • Ensure that Windows 7 is up to date with the latest updates and patches. Outdated software can sometimes cause unexpected behavior.

    6. Check Antivirus Settings

  • If you have antivirus software installed, check its settings to see if it might be interfering with the creation or display of folders with specific names. By following these steps, you may be able to identify the root cause of the issue and find a suitable workaround or solution. If the problem persists, feel free to provide more details so I can offer further assistance.
