Over the week-end something strange happened to one of our Windows 7 systems. It worked fine on Friday, was shut down for the week-end. When turned on this morning everything appeared normal. There are six user accounts set up on the system. No matter which one you choose to log in to, it requests the password for the first user set up on the system. When the screen comes up requesting the password, you can click on Switch User and then when you choose a user to log in as, it prompts for the correct user's password. I have never seen this happen and am at a loss as to how to correct.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Solution
It sounds like there might be a user profile-related issue causing the system to consistently prompt for the password of the first user account. This can happen due to corrupted user profiles or changes in the system settings. Here are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Check User Account Settings:
    • Go to the Control Panel and navigate to User Accounts.
    • Verify that the user account settings are correct and that each user has their own profile.
    []Try Safe Mode:
    • Restart the computer and boot into Safe Mode.
    • Check if the issue persists in Safe Mode. If not, it could indicate a third-party software conflict causing the issue.

    [
    ]Create a New User Account:
    • Create a new user account with administrative privileges.
    • Log in with the new account and check if the issue persists. This can help determine if the problem is specific to existing user accounts.
    []Check Registry Settings:
    • Be cautious when modifying the Windows Registry. Backup the Registry before making any changes.
    • Check for any incorrect registry settings related to user profiles. Incorrect registry entries can sometimes cause user account issues.
    [
    ]System File Checker (SFC) Scan:
    • Open a Command Prompt as an administrator.
    • Run the command: sfc /scannow
    • This will scan and repair any corrupted system files that might be causing the issue.
  2. Restore System:
    • If none of the above solutions work, consider restoring the system to a previous restore point before the issue occurred.

      Additional Notes:

      • Make sure all important data is backed up before attempting any major changes.
      • It's recommended to perform these steps with caution and ensure you have the necessary permissions before making any changes to the system.
Try these steps sequentially to see if any of them resolve the issue with the user accounts on your Windows 7 system. Let me know if you need more detailed instructions for any of these steps or if you encounter any specific issues during the troubleshooting process.
