The 19-year-old is 2.12m (6ft 10in) tall and weighs 127kg (20st) but the world record has brought her a lifetime of loneliness.

Her height is down to a brain tumour that was diagnosed when she was nine. It caused a hormone imbalance and impaired her vision.

'She looked different to her friends and I got a little worried,' her mother Ji said. 'I took her to the doctor because I wanted to be sure there was nothing seriously wrong with her.'

She needs a jab costing £2,000 a time every three months to control the tumour, which the family cannot always afford.

Taunted by her classmates while she was at school, Malee, from the Trat province in east Thailand, now spends all her time with her family.

'Since leaving school I've tried to feel more comfortable with who I am,' Malee said.

‘I’ve never had a boyfriend. I don’t think marriage is possible for someone like me,’ she said. ‘My father gets very worried about me, he doesn’t let me go anywhere alone because sometimes I need help getting up.’
