Windows 11 Widgets can usually be restored by confirming that the taskbar entry is enabled, restarting Windows, then repairing or resetting the Windows Web Experience Pack—the Microsoft Store component that delivers Widgets. This guide applies to Windows 11 PCs where the Widgets feature is available. If the button has disappeared entirely on a work or school PC, an organization policy may be disabling it; repair steps on the local PC will not override that policy.

A blank panel, an endless loading animation, or a panel that will not open can have different causes. Work through the following steps in order, testing Widgets after each one. Start with the least disruptive fixes; use Reset only after Repair has not helped.

A Windows 11 laptop displays Widgets alongside Installed apps settings for the Windows Web Experience Pack. Check that Widgets is enabled and restart its Windows session

First confirm that this is not simply a disabled taskbar entry. Widgets can be opened from the taskbar or with the keyboard shortcut Windows key + W.

  1. Right-click an empty area of the taskbar and select Taskbar settings.
Alternatively, open Start > Settings > Personalization > Taskbar.
  2. Under Taskbar items, turn Widgets On.
  3. Press Windows key + W.
    • If the board opens and loads normally, the problem was the disabled taskbar entry.
    • If the board opens but remains empty or keeps loading, continue with the next steps.
    • If nothing opens, do not assume the feature is missing. Continue through the repair procedure.
  4. Restart the PC:
    1. Save open work.
    2. Select Start > Power > Restart.
    3. Sign in again and press Windows key + W.

A restart closes the Widgets board and its supporting processes, reloads the Windows shell, and completes any update installation that was waiting for a restart. Avoid using Shut down if Fast Startup is enabled; Restart is the more reliable way to start a fresh Windows session.

Update Windows, the Web Experience Pack, and Store apps

Widgets depends on both Windows updates and Microsoft Store-delivered components. Microsoft identifies the Windows Web Experience Pack and Start Experiences App as components that should be current for Widgets and the Discover dashboard to work correctly.

Install pending Windows updates

  1. Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates.
  3. Download and install all offered updates.
  4. If Windows displays Restart now, save your work and select it.
  5. After sign-in, return to Windows Update and select Check for updates once more. Install anything newly offered.

Do not skip optional driver updates solely to troubleshoot Widgets. They are not normally required for this problem. Focus first on regular Windows quality and security updates.

Update Microsoft Store apps

  1. Open Microsoft Store from Start.
  2. Select Library in the lower-left corner.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Allow all available updates to finish.

If an update for Windows Web Experience Pack is listed, install it. It supplies widget-based and web-powered Windows experiences, including Widgets. Store updates can install silently in the background, but checking manually removes any doubt about whether an update is pending.

  1. Restart the PC after updates finish.
  2. Press Windows key + W and check whether the board now opens and populates.

If Microsoft Store will not open or will not update apps

Widgets repair may depend on the Store being functional. Reset the Store cache before moving on:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type the following command exactly:
    wsreset.exe
  3. Select OK.
  4. A blank Command Prompt window may appear briefly. Leave it open.
  5. Microsoft Store should open automatically after the cache reset completes.
  6. Return to Library > Check for updates, then restart Windows and test Widgets again.

This clears the Microsoft Store cache; it does not remove your installed Store apps.

Repair the Windows Web Experience Pack

Repair is the preferred repair action because it attempts to fix the installed app without progressing immediately to a full app reset.

  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. In the search box, enter Windows Web Experience Pack.
  3. Select the More button—three dots—next to Windows Web Experience Pack.
  4. Select Advanced options.
  5. Scroll to the Reset section.
  6. Select Repair.

Wait for Windows to complete the action. The button may become unavailable temporarily while repair runs.

  1. Restart the PC.
  2. Press Windows key + W to open Widgets.

Expected result: the board should open rather than hang, and installed widgets should begin to populate once the PC has an internet connection.

If Repair is unavailable, or repair finishes but the Widgets board remains blank, use the reset procedure in the next section.

Reset the Windows Web Experience Pack

Warning: Reset is more disruptive than Repair. It restores the app to its default state and can remove app-specific local data and settings. Use it only after updating and repairing the package have not fixed Widgets.
  1. Go to Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Search for Windows Web Experience Pack.
  3. Select the More button next to it, then select Advanced options.
  4. Scroll to the Reset section.
  5. Select Reset.
  6. Select Reset again when Windows asks for confirmation.
  7. Restart the PC.
  8. Open Microsoft Store > Library > Check for updates and install any updates offered.
  9. Press Windows key + W to test Widgets.

If Widgets opens after reset but initially looks sparse, give the board a moment to reload content. A reset may require the component to retrieve current content and configuration again.

If you cannot find Windows Web Experience Pack in Installed apps, open Microsoft Store, search for Windows Web Experience Pack, and install or update it if Store presents that option. Then restart Windows before testing the Widgets board.

Check the Microsoft account, connection, and proxy settings

Widgets can display information from installed apps even without a personalized Discover feed, but an active internet connection is needed for current web-based content. Signing in with the same Microsoft account on Windows and in Widgets also helps keep Discover personalization available across devices.

Confirm that the PC is online

  1. Select the network, volume, or battery area on the right side of the taskbar.
  2. Confirm that Wi-Fi or Ethernet shows as connected.
  3. Open a web browser and visit a normal website.

If websites do not load, fix the general network connection before continuing. Widgets cannot retrieve online weather, news, and other web-powered content on a disconnected PC.

If only Widgets is blank while websites work, continue with the proxy and account checks below.

Review proxy or VPN use carefully

A proxy, VPN, content filter, firewall, or workplace network can affect web-powered content. Do not disable a company-required proxy or VPN without approval from your IT department.

  1. Open Start > Settings > Network & internet > Proxy.
  2. Review the settings under Automatic proxy setup and Manual proxy setup.
  3. If this is a personal PC and you do not intentionally use a proxy, check whether a manual proxy server or setup script was unexpectedly enabled.
  4. If your organization provided the proxy configuration, leave it in place and ask IT whether access to Microsoft Store and Widgets services is restricted.
  5. If you use a personal VPN, disconnect it temporarily, open Widgets, and test whether content loads.
  6. Reconnect the VPN afterward if you need it.

A proxy routes traffic through another server. That is normal on many managed networks, so the appropriate fix is often an IT policy or network exception rather than removing the proxy from Windows.

Verify the Windows account state

  1. Open Start > Settings > Accounts > Your info.
  2. Check whether Windows shows that you are signed in with a Microsoft account or a local account.
  3. If Widgets opens but the Discover feed is not personalized, sign in to Widgets with the Microsoft account you use for Windows when the board offers that option.
  4. If you are intentionally using a local account, do not switch account types merely to fix a loading failure. First complete the update, repair, reset, and network checks in this guide.

Changing from a local account to a Microsoft account is a broader sign-in change, not a required repair for the basic Widgets board. Make that change only if you want Microsoft account integration across Windows services.

Identify an organization policy that disables Widgets

On managed PCs, the Widgets control can be removed or locked by Group Policy or mobile device management. Microsoft’s Widgets policy applies to the entire Widgets experience, including taskbar content.

Common signs include:

  • The Widgets switch is missing or cannot be changed in Settings > Personalization > Taskbar.
  • Pressing Windows key + W does nothing even after Windows and Store updates.
  • A message says that a setting is managed by your organization.
  • The PC belongs to an employer, school, library, kiosk, or shared environment.

If you administer a Windows Pro, Enterprise, or Education device and need to check the local policy:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type gpedit.msc, then select OK.
  3. Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Widgets.
  4. Open Allow widgets.
  5. Check whether the policy is set to Disabled.
    • Disabled prevents Widgets from being allowed on the device.
    • Not Configured leaves the setting under normal Windows and management-policy control.
  6. Do not change a company-managed setting without authorization. A device-management service may apply the policy again after you change it.

Windows 11 Home does not include Local Group Policy Editor. On Home edition or any company-managed device, contact the administrator rather than editing the registry to bypass policy. Registry changes are unnecessary for normal Widgets troubleshooting and can conflict with device management.

Troubleshoot the remaining common failure patterns

Widgets button is visible, but the board will not open

  • Confirm the toggle under Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Widgets is on.
  • Restart the PC, then press Windows key + W.
  • Install Windows updates and Store updates.
  • Repair the Windows Web Experience Pack, then reset it if repair does not work.
  • If the PC is managed, have IT confirm that the Allow widgets policy permits the feature.

The board opens but stays blank or shows an endless loading indicator

  • Test the internet connection in a browser.
  • Disconnect a personal VPN temporarily and test again.
  • Check Settings > Network & internet > Proxy for an unexpected manual proxy configuration.
  • Update the Windows Web Experience Pack and all Store app updates.
  • Repair, then reset, the Windows Web Experience Pack.
  • Sign out of Windows, restart, and sign in again if the problem appears tied to one account session.

Weather or a single widget is broken while the board itself works

The Widgets board and each installed widget are not necessarily the same component. Each widget is powered by its associated app or service.

  1. Open the Widgets board.
  2. Select the widget’s More options button.
  3. Look for its Powered by information.
  4. Update or repair the app that powers that individual widget if the option is available.

Do not reset the Web Experience Pack repeatedly when one third-party widget alone is failing. Remove and add that widget again, or update its associated app from Microsoft Store.

Microsoft Store cannot install the Web Experience Pack

  • Run wsreset.exe, then reopen Store.
  • Install pending Windows updates and restart.
  • Confirm the correct date, time, and region are set in Windows.
  • Check whether your network, firewall, proxy, or organization blocks Microsoft Store.
  • If Store works with a different network but not your usual work or school network, the restriction is likely network or management related and needs administrator assistance.

Last-resort network recovery

Warning: Network reset removes installed network adapters and their settings. You may need to set up VPN software, virtual switches, or specialized networking tools again afterward. Use this only if the PC has broader connectivity trouble, not merely because one widget is blank.
  1. Open Start > Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings.
  2. Select Network reset.
  3. Select Reset now, then select Yes to confirm.
  4. Allow Windows to restart.
  5. Reconnect to Wi-Fi if required, restore any necessary VPN configuration, run Windows Update and Microsoft Store updates, then test Widgets with Windows key + W.

If Widgets still will not open after Windows updates, Store updates, Web Experience Pack reset, a confirmed internet connection, and a policy check, use the Get Help app or contact your organization’s IT support. Include the exact symptom—missing button, board not opening, blank board, or one failing widget—and note whether the issue affects other Windows users on the same PC.
