When I try to open various tiles such a weather, Mah Jong, Solitaire etc. they simply freeze, or at best take forever to open. Is this the way Win8 is supposed to work? I see visions of Vista here.

Hi,

the tiles should only take a few seconds to open is your machine fully updated via the windows update? (if you run it and nothing appears then yes you are)
The type os install can also effect win 8. Upgrading over win 7 or any other os for that matter can sometimes lead to issues. A clean or custom install is a far better way of doing things so depending on your set up it might be food for thought.
