Windows 7 Cannot reboot after update

Hi all,
Did a complete install of Win 7 a month ago - was running like a dream - last update did not complete correctly had to force a reboot - would not even post - after an hour it started finally did a restore - tried to put machine into sleep mode - would not go to sleep forced close again - now will not even post
I don't think it is hardware - as all was working well till update
Suggestions?

If the machine is not posting at all it must be a hardware problem without question. The post screen takes place before the hard drive is even accessed.

I get the post screen but no beep and freezes there

Starts eventually

but then when windows has to do a reboot it freezes and needs a cold reboot - if windows can't reboot that would appear to be software yes?
