📎 AI Summary:
The thread discusses whether an old laptop's Windows license can be transferred to a new desktop build. The consensus is that OEM licenses are generally non-transferable because they are tied to the original hardware, particularly the motherboard. The overall tone is informational, concluding that using the laptop's Windows on a new PC is not feasible legally or practically.

Hello I am looking to build my own computer soon and have an old laptop that is never used. I was wondering if it is possible to take windows off the old laptop and put it onto the new computer. Thanks for any help

Solution
If it's the copy of Windows that came with the laptop then the answer is no. These are generally OEM licenses and they are not legally transferable. Also if it's Windows 7 or older it will not run on newer hardware since there isn't driver support typically.
