Nayaz, a new Windows 8.1 user on a Dell laptop, is experiencing slow file transfer speeds and frequent stalls when copying files from his hard drive to a USB flash drive. He initially replaced Windows 8 with Ubuntu, but reinstalled Windows after, and now faces transfer issues potentially related to hardware or driver problems. The forum response requests system specifications, to help diagnose the cause of the slow transfer rates.

Hello everyone, this is my first post in this forum and I hope I can get some help from you guys. So I will try to explain my problem as simple as possible.

My Dell laptop originally came with Windows 8. While trying to install Ubuntu alongside I don't know what happened and Windows 8 was fully replaced by Ubuntu. So a friend of mine gave me a DVD which had Windows 8.1 and I successfully installed Windows again.

My problem is I have been noticing some changes when i try to copy files. If I try to copy files from a Flash Drive to my hard drive it's fine but if I try to do it the other way i.e from the hard drive to a Flash Drive, the transfer speed is very low compared to when i was on Windows 8. I don't know why but several times the transfer speed would drop down 0 bytes, stay at 0 bytes for 20-30 secs and then would move up to 5 mb or 7 mb.

Has anyone experienced this problem and been able to solve this?
Please help me if someone knows the solution.

Thank you.
Regards,
Nayaz.

Can you provide your system specifications? Particularly, what type of motherboard do you have?
