I have found that sometimes when my Laptop goes in to hybernate it won't have any video output when it resumes. I never get this when my laptop goes to sleep.

WTF (Why the Face), How can I recover from this issue without forcing a hard reboot and losing all of my work?

Don't use Hibernate......

Use manufacturers drivers only, for all drivers.....

Wait for drivers to mature
