AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.8.1 is available now with day-one driver support for Star Wars Zero Company, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, and the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 early-access beta — but Radeon RX 9000 owners planning to play this weekend should read the known-issues list before treating it as an automatic upgrade.

AMD published the release notes on August 20, and Neowin first highlighted the update’s new game support and Radeon RX 9050 4GB enablement. The timing is pointed: Activision’s official schedule puts the Modern Warfare 4 early-access beta on PC from August 21 through August 25, followed by the open beta from August 28 through September 1. EA and Focus Entertainment have separately confirmed that Star Wars Zero Company and Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy both arrive on PC on August 27.

The release is a conventional game-ready package rather than a feature-heavy Adrenalin revision. Its value is concentrated in launch-period compatibility, three targeted bug fixes, and support for the 4GB Radeon RX 9050 variant. The catch is that AMD’s own notes identify an FSR reporting problem in the Modern Warfare 4 beta, a Windows 10 configuration regression, and a Starfield crash for which the company explicitly recommends the prior 26.7.1 driver.

AMD lists Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Open Beta Early Access among the games newly supported by Adrenalin 26.8.1. For players who preordered the game and intend to enter the early-access test beginning August 21, this is the driver AMD has prepared for that build.

“Game support,” however, is not a performance promise. AMD has published no game-specific benchmark figures, frame-time data, FSR quality comparisons, shader-compilation information, or specific fixes for Modern Warfare 4. It means the driver has been validated or tuned for the beta release to an extent AMD considers suitable for launch-period support; it does not establish that every Radeon configuration will perform identically or that an upgrade will solve a pre-existing system problem.

More importantly, AMD lists a specific unresolved issue for Radeon RX 9000-series hardware: when FSR Upscaling and FSR Frame Generation are enabled in the Modern Warfare 4 early-access beta, Adrenalin may display them as inactive. The wording describes a status-reporting problem in AMD Software, not proof that either in-game feature has failed to activate. Players should therefore verify the setting inside the game before assuming FSR has been disabled simply because Adrenalin’s overlay or application page says it is inactive.

That distinction is more than cosmetic during a beta. Users trying to compare performance with FSR or frame generation enabled could draw the wrong conclusion from the driver control panel. AMD has not given a workaround or a target date for a correction, so RX 9000 owners should record their in-game settings and actual performance rather than rely on the Adrenalin status indicator alone.

Activision says the early-access beta requires a preorder on PC through Xbox on PC, Steam, or Battle.net. The second beta weekend does not require a preorder. For players waiting for the open test on August 28, there is time to see whether AMD posts a hotfix or revised release note after the first weekend produces broader compatibility data.

August 27 puts two more PC launches on the driver’s list​

The same driver adds support for Star Wars Zero Company and Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, which are both scheduled for release on August 27. Those are distinct types of PC releases: EA describes Zero Company as a single-player turn-based tactics game from Bit Reactor, made in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games, while Focus Entertainment and Asobo Studio position Resonance as a prequel to the A Plague Tale series.

AMD’s own game page for Resonance gives a useful indication of the hardware class expected by the game. It lists a Radeon RX 5700 XT-equivalent GPU as the minimum AMD recommendation and a Radeon RX 6800-equivalent as recommended, alongside 16GB of system memory and an SSD. That does not substitute for independent testing, but it does make one part of the 26.8.1 release notes particularly conspicuous: this driver simultaneously adds explicit support for the Radeon RX 9050 4GB and warns that the card can run into memory constraints in an older, demanding PC game.

For Resonance players using an RX 9000-series GPU, AMD lists another issue tied to its software telemetry. Disabling Frame Generation can cause Anti-Lag 2 to appear inactive in Adrenalin. Again, the stated fault concerns what AMD Software reports; AMD does not say that the game’s frame-generation toggle disables Anti-Lag 2 functionality itself. Still, anyone testing latency-sensitive settings should avoid treating the driver UI as definitive evidence until AMD resolves the status problem.

The practical advice is simple. Install 26.8.1 if one of these three games is your immediate reason for updating, then test the game itself before changing a stable system-wide configuration. If the driver’s FSR or Anti-Lag 2 labels do not match the in-game state, document the mismatch rather than repeatedly reinstalling the package.


Radeon RX 9050 4GB support comes with a candid VRAM caveat​

AMD calls out the Radeon RX 9050 4GB as new product support in 26.8.1. The company’s July 28 Adrenalin 26.7.1 release already named the Radeon RX 9050 family as supported, so the change here appears to be the explicit enablement or recognition of the lower-memory 4GB configuration rather than an entirely new Radeon product line.

The release notes make the limitation unusually clear. AMD states that Cyberpunk 2077 recommends at least 6GB of video memory and advises RX 9050 4GB users who encounter problems to turn graphics-intensive features down or off. That is not a driver bug that a later release can necessarily erase; it is a capacity constraint. Texture quality, ray tracing, upscaling modes, crowd density, and other settings can push modern games beyond the practical memory budget of a 4GB card.

The consequence is that buyers and system builders should identify the card’s memory configuration rather than stopping at the “Radeon RX 9050” label. AMD’s driver support confirms the 4GB model is recognized and usable. It does not mean the card is suited to high settings in every current PC game, and AMD’s own Cyberpunk 2077 warning establishes that point before third-party performance testing has even had time to mature.

That warning also changes how to read the new-game support list. The RX 9050 4GB may install and launch Star Wars Zero Company or Resonance with the correct driver, but driver certification cannot create additional VRAM. Players should start conservatively with texture and other memory-heavy settings, particularly in games released after the card’s 4GB configuration was designed.

Three fixes target combined-graphics systems and Windows 10 capture​

AMD lists three corrected issues in 26.8.1. The first two affect systems using what the company calls a multi-adapter, or combined-graphics, configuration. On Radeon RX 7000-series hardware and newer, Marvel Rivals and Subnautica 2 could fail to launch in that setup. On Radeon RX 9000-series hardware, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III could crash at startup.

The exact affected system layouts are not further defined in the notes. AMD does not say whether the failures were limited to particular integrated-plus-discrete GPU combinations, driver routing behavior, or application-selected adapters. Users with a single active Radeon GPU should not expect these fixes to alter their experience; users with multi-adapter machines have a concrete reason to retry the affected games on 26.8.1.

The third fix is narrower but useful for creators and players who routinely clip gameplay. On Radeon RX 9000 systems running Windows 10, Adrenalin’s recording and replay functions could fail to save their captured file when no audio output device was selected. AMD says that condition is fixed. It is a reminder that capture failures may be caused by a missing audio endpoint even when the user expects a video-only recording.

Windows 10 users should check Smart Access Memory after updating​

The most consequential known issue outside game support remains a Windows 10 problem: AMD Smart Access Memory may become disabled after driver installation. It was already present in Adrenalin 26.7.1 and remains listed in 26.8.1, meaning the newest package has not resolved it.

Anyone updating a Windows 10 Radeon system should verify the Smart Access Memory state after installation rather than assume it persisted. This matters especially for users who benchmark or maintain carefully tuned game profiles: a post-update performance change may reflect the feature being disabled, not a change in the new driver’s game optimization.

AMD also warns that AI Bundle component installation can fail in regions where access to Hugging Face and GitHub is limited. That issue is separate from the core display driver, but it means organizations or enthusiasts deploying optional AI-related components behind restrictive network controls should test the install path before treating Adrenalin 26.8.1 as a hands-off rollout.

Finally, AMD says Radeon RX 9000 users who see intermittent Starfield crashes should install Adrenalin 26.7.1 instead. That is a direct rollback recommendation from the vendor, not a generic suggestion to chase an older “stable” driver. For those systems, Starfield is the deciding workload: 26.8.1 brings launch support for this week’s games, but AMD’s own record says 26.7.1 remains the safer choice if Starfield stability is non-negotiable.
