Fab2, the semiconductor startup formerly known as Atomic Semi and co-founded by veteran chip engineer Jim Keller, is building out an Austin research-and-development site—but the public record currently supports a much smaller footprint than the company’s widely circulated claims of a 120,000-square-foot headquarters and production facility. The Austin American-Statesman reports that Texas filings show Fab2 renovating 6,000 square feet at 6301 E. Stassney Lane, with a second 7,555-square-foot phase expected to finish in February. The first phase is listed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation as a $1.5 million renovation of office space into R&D workspace, with an August 31 completion date.
Fab2 CEO Sam Zeloof said in April that the company was shifting hiring from California to Austin after four years and described a 120,000-square-foot site for R&D and production. But, according to the Statesman, there are no public filings connected to Fab2 for a facility matching that description. Austin’s economic development office said it had not discussed or received information about such a plant.

The distinction matters because Fab2’s pitch is unusually ambitious. Rather than operating a conventional leading-edge wafer fab, the startup says it intends to build the equipment, software and compact manufacturing facilities needed to create what it calls a “fab fab”—in effect, a factory for smaller chip fabs.
That model would place Fab2 far closer to R&D, prototyping and low-volume manufacturing than to the multibillion-dollar fabrication campuses associated with Samsung, Intel or TSMC. The company’s claims of a large Austin production hub therefore deserve scrutiny not because the concept is impossible, but because semiconductor facilities require substantial construction, utility, permitting and environmental records as they scale.

Lockhart claim is also disputed​

The company has also said it operates a 30,000-square-foot manufacturing site in Lockhart, roughly 30 miles south of Austin. The Statesman reported that Lockhart Economic Development Corp. director Holly Malish said Fab2 is not located there and that the organization had no contact with the firm. Caldwell County similarly said it had no record of Fab2 operating in the county.
That does not rule out future expansion, private leases or activity not yet reflected in public filings. It does mean that Fab2’s public facility map is ahead of what local officials and available project documentation can corroborate.

Keller’s name raises the stakes​

Keller’s involvement gives the company instant credibility among processor and systems enthusiasts. He has led engineering work at AMD, Apple, Intel and Tesla, and is now chief executive of Tenstorrent. Zeloof, Fab2’s CEO, is known for earlier home-built semiconductor fabrication projects.
For Austin IT and hardware professionals, the immediate takeaway is more restrained: Fab2 has a documented R&D buildout in Southeast Austin, not yet a verified 120,000-square-foot headquarters or a confirmed Lockhart manufacturing plant. The next meaningful milestone will be whether future construction, permits and local economic-development disclosures substantiate the larger Texas expansion the company has described.
