Tata Consultancy Services has opened its Consumer Business Group Gemini Experience Center in Kolkata, a TCS-run co-creation facility built around Google Cloud and Google’s Gemini models for retail, consumer packaged goods, and travel and hospitality clients. The immediate consequence is narrower than the announcement’s “agentic AI” language suggests: this is a place for demonstrations, workshops, prototyping and consulting-led solution design, not a new Gemini product release or a broadly available enterprise service with published pricing. TCS disclosed the opening in a July 16 regulatory filing and accompanying press release. Reuters, reporting from that filing, and PTI both described the Kolkata operation as TCS’s eighth Gemini Experience Center worldwide and third in India. The distinction is important for IT leaders: TCS is expanding the commercial and engineering apparatus around Gemini deployments, rather than announcing a new model, cloud region, Windows client capability, or a customer production rollout.

The Kolkata center is the eighth location in TCS’s Gemini Experience Center network. Before it opened, TCS had said its seventh center was at its Innovation Hub in Troy, Michigan, serving manufacturers; its fiscal 2025–26 annual report identifies earlier centers in Bengaluru, Chennai, New York, Riyadh, Singapore and São Paulo.
That history confirms the arithmetic behind TCS’s stated goal of reaching 10 centers globally by the end of 2026. With Kolkata now open, the company needs to establish only two more centers worldwide in the remaining months of the year. Because TCS says it will operate four locations in India by then, one of those two remaining centers is expected to be in India, while the other would be elsewhere.
TCS has assigned each Indian site a vertical rather than presenting them as interchangeable AI showrooms. Chennai is focused on retail, Bengaluru on banking, financial services and insurance, and Kolkata on the broader consumer-business portfolio. The new center’s target industries overlap with the Chennai operation—especially retail—but extend the remit to consumer goods and travel, tourism and hospitality.
That verticalization is the real product strategy. TCS is positioning Gemini as the model layer beneath industry-specific integrations, business workflows, domain knowledge and managed delivery. For customers, the purchase is likely to be a consulting and implementation engagement tied to their own systems, rather than a visit to Kolkata followed by a standardized software subscription.

The announced use cases depend on integration work​

TCS says the Kolkata center will demonstrate work in store operations, supply-chain management, omnichannel retail and customer service. The examples include planogram analysis, warehouse receiving, supplier onboarding, contract handling, product enrichment, hybrid search, invoice reconciliation, contact-center operations, and HR and talent-acquisition functions.
Those categories show where the center is intended to land: systems that already hold high-value, highly fragmented business data. A Gemini-based assistant that merely answers questions from a product catalog is comparatively easy to demonstrate. An agentic workflow that can ingest invoices, identify discrepancies, pull information from supplier systems, generate a recommended action, and potentially trigger downstream processes is a substantially different deployment.
TCS’s press release says it will apply “forward deployed engineering” and its Human+AI Autonomy model. That phrase implies engineers working closely with a client’s environment rather than a self-service deployment. It also means the hard part will remain familiar to enterprise IT teams: connecting identity, permissions, data-quality controls, APIs, audit trails and exception handling before an AI-generated recommendation becomes an operational action.
The July 16 filing does not specify which Google Cloud services will underpin each solution, what systems of record the sample agents connect to, what deployment models are supported, or what controls are required before agents can act. It also does not name a single customer committed to deploying a solution from the new center.
Organizations considering an engagement should treat the demonstrations as a starting point and require production answers before expanding beyond a contained pilot:
  • They should establish whether an agent is limited to retrieval and recommendation or can write back to ERP, CRM, commerce, ticketing or supplier-management systems.
  • They should define the identity and authorization model for every tool call, including how privileged actions are approved, logged and reversed.
  • They should identify which enterprise data will be retained, indexed or passed to Gemini services, and which residency, retention and contractual requirements apply.
  • They should demand measurable baselines for accuracy, exception rates, human-review volume, processing time and financial impact rather than accept a workshop demonstration as evidence of operational readiness.
For Windows administrators and IT operations teams, there is no endpoint change attached to this announcement. TCS has not announced a Windows integration, new Microsoft management capability, or a replacement for existing AI tooling. The relevance lies in the back-end decision: enterprises already standardized on Windows, Active Directory, Entra ID, Microsoft 365 or hybrid line-of-business applications may still be asked to connect those environments to a Google Cloud-based agent platform through TCS.

TCS’s 3,000-agent figure is not a deployment count​

TCS says it has built 3,000 “industry- and context-aware” AI agents using Gemini Enterprise that can integrate into customer environments. That is a sizable claim, but the number needs careful reading. The company does not say how many of those agents are in production, how many are reusable templates versus customer-specific implementations, how many active users they serve, or how the 3,000 figure is counted.
An “agent” can describe anything from a narrowly scoped retrieval workflow to a multi-tool process that coordinates several systems. Without definitions, customer names, utilization figures, service-level commitments or outcomes, the count is best understood as TCS’s catalog of agent components and solutions under development or available for adaptation—not proof that 3,000 autonomous business processes are live.
Reuters and PTI reported the claim as part of TCS’s announcement, but neither report identified independently verified deployment numbers or disclosed production results from the agents. TCS also has not published pricing for the Kolkata center’s offerings, target implementation timelines, or the commercial boundary between Google Cloud consumption charges, Gemini Enterprise licensing and TCS professional services.
That omission is material. The expensive portion of an enterprise agent deployment is often not inference alone; it is the integration, data preparation, governance, operational support and continuing model evaluation that turn a controlled demonstration into a system employees can rely on.

A second AI partner facility arrived in Kolkata within five weeks​

The Gemini center is also TCS’s second prominent AI partner facility announced for Kolkata in little more than a month. On June 12, TCS announced an Oracle AI Data Platform Lab and Center of Excellence in the city, described as India’s first such Oracle-focused site. That earlier filing placed the Oracle facility at Delta Park Lords in Kolkata.
TCS’s Gemini announcement does not disclose the Kolkata center’s street address, floor space, staffing, opening investment, or whether it shares premises with the Oracle operation. The two facilities may be close, co-located, or entirely separate; the public record does not establish that. Calling the Gemini center a new campus or a Google Cloud facility would go beyond what TCS has announced.
Still, the sequence shows a deliberate move by TCS to make Kolkata a visible site for partner-backed AI solution engineering. The Oracle lab is aimed at data platforms, databases and AI-driven automation. The Gemini center is aimed at business-process agents and consumer-sector applications. The common thread is that TCS is using physical centers to convert hyperscaler partnerships into client engagements that can move from architecture sessions to implementation work.
The remaining concrete milestone is TCS’s end-of-2026 target: two additional Gemini Experience Centers, including one more in India. Until TCS identifies production customers and publishes measurable results from the Kolkata programs, the center should be judged as an expanded delivery and sales capability—not evidence that the company’s consumer-business agents have already crossed from demonstration into enterprise-scale use.
