Ohio’s universities are moving generative AI from an optional classroom tool toward a core part of the undergraduate experience, even as many students remain unconvinced that the skills will matter in their careers.
The Springfield News-Sun reports that the University of Dayton will require first-year students this fall to encounter large language models in two courses, then revisit their use within their majors. Ohio State’s broader AI Fluency program is already designed to ensure that students in the class of 2029 graduate able to apply AI in their disciplines, while Miami University and Wright State are embedding AI instruction through majors, individual courses and curriculum planning.
For Windows users headed into college—and the IT departments supporting them—the shift means AI literacy is becoming less about knowing which chatbot to open and more about evaluating output, protecting data, and understanding when a generated answer is unsuitable for academic or professional use.

Dayton’s plan places AI in the first-year curriculum from two directions: students will learn foundational concepts, then examine how generative AI is changing research and writing. The university says the goal is responsible and creative use consistent with critical thinking, ethical reasoning, human dignity and equity.
Ohio State has taken the more explicit “AI fluent” route. Its required General Education Launch Seminar introduces undergraduates to generative AI basics, and colleges are expected to build discipline-specific AI learning into degree pathways. The university’s framing matters: AI fluency is not presented as a standalone prompt-engineering course, but as the ability to use the technology thoughtfully within a student’s field.
That distinction could determine whether these programs age well. A course built around a particular model or interface can become obsolete quickly; teaching verification, privacy judgment, source evaluation and domain-specific limits is more durable.

Student Doubt Is the Complication​

The rapid institutional push arrives alongside evidence that the audience is divided. The National Association of Colleges and Employers’ 2026 Student Survey found that 31% of graduating seniors considered AI skills of little or no importance to their future careers. Another 50.5% said they were not building AI skills for the future.
NACE’s findings do not show simple rejection. Students cited concerns about accuracy, ethics and environmental effects, while employers increasingly assign AI-related work to interns and newer hires. The gap is consequential: campuses are responding to an employment market where AI use is spreading, while a sizable share of students questions both the value and legitimacy of adopting it.
That skepticism is not necessarily a skills deficit. In a classroom setting, concern about unreliable output, plagiarism, surveillance, training-data use and overdependence can be evidence of the critical judgment universities say they want to foster.

The Curriculum Review Adds Pressure, Not a Mandate​

Ohio House Bill 96 requires public-university trustees to evaluate general-education curricula by March 31, 2027, including consideration of AI alongside civics and other subjects. The law does not itself require an AI course or prescribe a single technology platform.
That leaves institutions with different models. Wright State says it has existing AI-specific classes and faculty who integrate AI tools into teaching, but no proposed AI-related changes to required coursework. Miami’s “AI in the Majors” project is aimed at putting AI-related learning objectives into degree programs rather than imposing a universal fall requirement.
For university IT teams, this decentralized approach raises a familiar operational problem. If AI is embedded across courses, the practical policy must cover approved tools, account access, data handling, accessibility, academic-integrity rules and faculty support—not merely publish a list of chatbots students may use.
The next test begins with the fall term: whether Ohio’s students leave these courses with durable judgment about AI systems, or simply more exposure to whichever large language model is currently fashionable.
