WinCentral reported on August 9 that Microsoft had acknowledged the problem and that the Xbox team was investigating a failure to recognize active Ultimate memberships. Microsoft has not published a matching notice on its public Xbox support pages or a detailed incident record explaining the scope, affected regions, platforms, or expected repair time. Independent player reports do corroborate the underlying symptom across the Xbox console interface, the Xbox mobile app, and the Windows Xbox app.
The important correction is in the wording: available evidence points to a Game Pass quest entitlement and point-earning problem, not a broad outage preventing all players from cashing out accumulated Microsoft Rewards points for gift cards or other catalog items. Those are connected systems, but they are not the same transaction.
The Bug Appears to Misclassify Subscribers at the Rewards Layer
Xbox’s own Rewards documentation says Game Pass Ultimate and Premium unlock exclusive quests, while Ultimate can also increase points earned through eligible gameplay and Store purchases. The subscription is therefore used as an entitlement check: the account has to be recognized by the Rewards service before it is offered the applicable quest or multiplier.
Reports posted from late July through August 8 describe accounts that still show an active Ultimate subscription in account settings but display a lock icon over Game Pass quests in the Rewards area. Other players say the Xbox app offers the lower “Everyone” values instead of the Ultimate bonus, even though Game Pass access, multiplayer privileges, and the normal game catalog continue to work.
That pattern strongly suggests that Xbox’s core subscription service and the Rewards entitlement service are returning different answers for the same Microsoft account. It is a service-side synchronization failure, or at least behaves like one. A console reset cannot reliably repair a disagreement between Microsoft account services.
One report in the Microsoft Rewards community described the problem on both mobile and Windows, with the Xbox app recognizing the plan in one part of the interface while the Rewards page urged the player to subscribe to Game Pass. Another user said the issue crossed devices and sometimes disappeared without any meaningful local change. Those reports do not establish how many accounts are affected, but they rule out the simple explanation that this is confined to a single app build or a particular Xbox console.
“Claiming” Points Is Not the Same as Redeeming Them
The distinction matters because Xbox uses two similar words for different actions. A player completes an activity and claims its points in the Rewards Hub. Later, those accumulated Microsoft Rewards points can be redeemed through the Rewards catalog for Xbox gift cards, sweepstakes entries, donations, and other offers.
Microsoft’s current Xbox Rewards page still advertises gift-card redemption and does not list a Game Pass Ultimate membership as a general condition for spending an existing Rewards balance. Microsoft’s Rewards support documentation instead lists the usual redemption failure causes: redemption from the wrong region, attempts across multiple regions, VPN use, phone-authentication problems, and unavailable reward stock.
None of those published redemption restrictions is an inactive-or-unrecognized Game Pass Ultimate flag.
That does not prove every affected player can successfully cash out points at this moment. It does show that the public evidence does not support treating this as a blanket “Xbox players can’t redeem Rewards points” outage. Players encountering a failure at the final gift-card checkout should capture the exact error, because that could be a separate Rewards catalog, identity-verification, or regional-account issue rather than the Game Pass recognition bug now being reported.
The more likely harm is quieter: a completed Game Pass activity may be presented with a reduced award, or a subscriber-only quest may remain locked until the account is correctly recognized.
Incorrectly Claimed Rewards May Be the Hard Part to Fix
The immediate temptation is to keep tapping through daily Rewards prompts until something registers. That is not necessarily harmless. Several affected users report that the app exposes lower values while it fails to detect Ultimate, and some say that opening an Xbox notification or the daily pop-up can claim the reward automatically.
Microsoft’s official Rewards material says players should claim points daily, but it does not explain whether a quest claimed while the service has classified an Ultimate member incorrectly will be recalculated later. Microsoft also has not said whether it will issue automatic make-good credits for points missed during the incident.
That omission is the practical issue for subscribers. A temporary lock is inconvenient; a lower reward that becomes final after it is claimed is potentially a permanent loss unless Xbox corrects it afterward. As of August 9, there is no public promise from Microsoft that it will backfill missed Game Pass quest points, restore broken weekly streaks, or preserve monthly 4-Pack and 8-Pack progress for affected accounts.
Players should therefore treat this as an accounting problem, not just a cosmetic app glitch. Before claiming a Game Pass-linked reward, check whether the Rewards Hub identifies the account as Ultimate and displays the expected quest access or multiplier. If it does not, record screenshots showing the active subscription in account settings alongside the locked quest or reduced reward amount.
Restarting the App Is a Workaround, Not a Resolution
Community reports say force-closing and reopening the Xbox app, signing out and back in, or waiting for a later refresh can sometimes make the subscription recognition return. The reports are consistent enough to make that a reasonable low-risk troubleshooting step, but they are also inconsistent enough that it should not be presented as a fix.
One player reported needing multiple app restarts before Ultimate status appeared properly; another said restarts, resets, and reboots seemed ineffective and that the problem cleared on its own later. When a subscription is recognized on one device and not another, logging out may prompt a new entitlement check, but it cannot guarantee that Microsoft’s Rewards backend will stay synchronized.
The useful order of operations is straightforward:
- Confirm that the Microsoft account signed into the Xbox app is the same account that holds the active Game Pass Ultimate subscription.
- Check the subscription status through the Microsoft account page, rather than relying solely on the Rewards tile.
- Update the Xbox app and retry after a clean sign-out and sign-in if the Rewards Hub shows Game Pass quests as locked.
- Avoid using a VPN or changing account regions while troubleshooting, because Microsoft identifies both as separate reasons Rewards redemptions can fail.
- Keep a record of the affected quest, displayed point value, date, and any successful claim, especially if a weekly streak or monthly pack is involved.
Players should not cancel or repurchase an Ultimate subscription simply because the Rewards Hub fails to recognize it. Nothing in the current reports indicates that billing or Game Pass access has been revoked. Rebuying a subscription could create a second billing problem without solving the Rewards entitlement mismatch.
Xbox Needs to Clarify What Will Be Restored
Microsoft has modernized Rewards with Xbox into a cross-device program that spans console, Windows, mobile, Store purchases, Game Pass tiers, daily quests, weekly streaks, and monthly packs. That makes a narrow account-entitlement failure consequential: the subscriber can still play, but the service that is supposed to reward that activity may deny the associated value.
The company’s public materials also make clear that Game Pass rewards are not uniform. They vary by plan, market, Rewards level, activity, and offer. That complexity gives Microsoft ample reason to publish precise incident details when the subscription check breaks: whether Premium accounts are affected as well as Ultimate accounts, whether Windows and mobile are equally affected, whether claimed rewards will be corrected, and whether time-limited streaks will be protected.
For now, the defensible conclusion is narrower than the initial outage framing. Active Game Pass Ultimate members appear to be facing an intermittent Xbox Rewards recognition failure that can lock quests and reduce displayed earning opportunities. Microsoft’s reported investigation is welcome, but until it states how it will handle miscredited or missed points, affected players should document every incorrect reward rather than assume the balance will be repaired automatically.
