Use Different Wallpapers for Each Virtual Desktop in Windows 11

Windows 11 can use a different wallpaper on each virtual desktop without third-party software. Create or open the virtual desktops in Task View, right-click the desktop you want to customize, select Choose background, then set Personalize your background to Picture and choose an image. This capability is supported in Windows 11 and is also documented for Windows 10, although Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Use a still image—per-desktop wallpapers do not support a slideshow or a different solid color for each virtual desktop.

Prerequisites and compatibility​

Before you begin, make sure you have:

• A Windows 11 PC with access to the desktop and Settings.
• At least two image files if you want visibly different wallpapers.
• At least two virtual desktops, or willingness to create another one.
• Images stored locally or in a location that remains available. A wallpaper can revert or turn black if the source file is moved, deleted, renamed, or stored on a disconnected external drive or unavailable network location.

You do not need administrator rights, a Microsoft account, a restart, or Registry changes.

Important limitations​

• Use Picture as the background type. Microsoft documents per-virtual-desktop backgrounds only for still pictures.
• Do not use Slideshow if your goal is one fixed, unique picture per virtual desktop.
• You cannot assign separate wallpapers by both virtual desktop and physical monitor at the same time. With multiple virtual desktops in use, Windows does not support configuring a different background picture for each monitor.
• A theme change can replace the wallpapers you configured. If you apply a new theme later, recheck each virtual desktop.

Set a different wallpaper for each virtual desktop in Windows 11​

1. Open Task View.
   Select the Task view button on the taskbar, or press:
   Windows key + Tab
   Expected result: Windows shows thumbnails for your open windows and a row of virtual desktops near the bottom of the screen.
2. Create additional desktops if needed.
   In Task View, select New desktop.
   Repeat until you have the workspaces you need, such as:
   • Desktop 1 — Personal
   • Desktop 2 — Work
   • Desktop 3 — Projects
   You can rename a desktop by right-clicking its thumbnail and selecting Rename, then entering a useful name.
   Expected result: Each virtual desktop appears as its own thumbnail in Task View.
3. Open the background settings for the first desktop.
   In Task View, right-click the thumbnail for the virtual desktop you want to personalize.
   Select Choose background.
   Windows opens:
   Settings > Personalization > Background
   The desktop you selected is the one Windows will configure, even if it was not your previously active desktop.
4. Set the background mode to Picture.
   Under Personalize your background, open the drop-down menu and select Picture.
   Do not select Slideshow, Solid color, or Windows spotlight for this procedure.
5. Choose the wallpaper image.
   Under Choose your picture, either:
   • Select one of the displayed recent images, or
   • Select Browse and choose an image file from your PC.
   After you select the file, Windows applies it to the selected virtual desktop.
   Under Choose a fit for your desktop image, select a display option if needed:
   • Fill: Usually the best default for a full-screen wallpaper; the image may be cropped.
   • Fit: Shows the entire image but can leave borders.
   • Stretch: Fills the screen but can distort the image.
   • Tile: Repeats a smaller image.
   • Center: Places the image at its original size.
   • Span: Spans one image across multiple monitors.
   Expected result: The selected desktop now displays the chosen image.
6. Repeat for every remaining virtual desktop.
   Press Windows key + Tab again.
   Right-click the next desktop thumbnail, select Choose background, set Personalize your background to Picture if necessary, and choose a different image.
   Repeat until every virtual desktop has its intended wallpaper.
7. Switch between desktops to confirm the assignments.
   Use either Task View or these shortcuts:
   Windows key + Ctrl + Right Arrow
Windows key + Ctrl + Left Arrow
   Expected result: The wallpaper changes as you move between virtual desktops, while your open windows remain organized in their respective desktops.

No restart or sign-out is required.

Verification of success​

Use the following quick test:

1. Press Windows key + Ctrl + Right Arrow to move to the next virtual desktop.
2. Confirm that the wallpaper is different from the prior desktop.
3. Press Windows key + Ctrl + Left Arrow to return.
4. Confirm that the original wallpaper returns.
5. Press Windows key + Tab and verify that all of your desktops still appear.

If the desktop wallpaper changes correctly as you switch desktops, the configuration is complete.

Alternate method: assign a recent picture to a specific desktop from Settings​

Use this method when the images you want already appear in the Recent images area of Background settings. It can be faster than opening Task View for every assignment.

1. Open Settings with:
   Windows key + I
2. Go to:
   Personalization > Background
3. Under Personalize your background, select Picture.
4. Under Recent images, right-click the image preview you want to use.
5. Choose the appropriate command:
   • Set for all desktops to apply one wallpaper everywhere, or
   • Select the individual virtual desktop that should receive that image.
6. Repeat with another recent image for each remaining desktop.

Expected result: Windows assigns each chosen still image to the virtual desktop selected in the image’s context menu.
If an image is not listed under Recent images, select Browse first to add it, then use the image preview’s right-click menu if you prefer this assignment method.

Windows 10 notes​

Windows 10 uses the same core Task View workflow, though its taskbar appearance and Settings layout may look different from Windows 11.

1. Open Task View by selecting the Task View button on the taskbar or pressing:
   Windows key + Tab
2. Select New desktop if you need another workspace.
3. Right-click the desktop thumbnail you want to customize and select Choose background.
4. In Settings, go to:
   Personalization > Background
5. Set Background to Picture, then choose a still image.
6. Repeat for the other virtual desktops.

Windows 10 is no longer receiving normal free security updates or technical support. If you still use it, the wallpaper steps can remain useful, but upgrading to a supported Windows version is recommended for security.

Troubleshooting and rollback​

Every virtual desktop gets the same wallpaper​

Make sure you are assigning the picture to a specific virtual desktop rather than applying it globally.

1. Press Windows key + Tab.
2. Right-click the intended desktop thumbnail.
3. Select Choose background.
4. Set Personalize your background to Picture.
5. Select or browse to the image.

If you use the Settings alternate method, right-click the image under Recent images and choose an individual desktop. Do not choose Set for all desktops.

The wallpaper changes back after selecting Slideshow, Solid color, or Windows spotlight​

This is expected behavior for this use case. Per-virtual-desktop custom backgrounds require Picture mode.

1. Switch to the affected virtual desktop.
2. Open:
   Settings > Personalization > Background
3. Change Personalize your background to Picture.
4. Select the wallpaper again.
5. Repeat for the other desktops.

If you want a slideshow, use it with a single virtual desktop instead of relying on unique fixed wallpapers across multiple desktops.

The wallpaper is black, missing, or changes after reconnecting a drive​

Windows may no longer be able to find the image file.

1. Check whether the original image was moved, deleted, renamed, or stored on a disconnected USB drive, network share, or cloud-only folder.
2. Copy the wallpapers to a stable local folder, such as:
   C:\Users\<your-user-name>\Pictures\Wallpapers
3. Reassign each image using Task View > right-click desktop > Choose background.

Avoid deleting the source wallpaper files after assigning them.

A new theme replaced the per-desktop wallpapers​

Themes can include a background and may overwrite your personal choices.

1. Open:
   Settings > Personalization > Themes
2. Select the theme you want to keep, if needed.
3. Return to:
   Settings > Personalization > Background
4. Reassign a Picture wallpaper to each virtual desktop.

To reduce accidental changes, avoid applying unfamiliar themes after you finish setting up the desktops.

The option to choose a specific desktop is unavailable​

First, confirm that multiple virtual desktops exist.

1. Press Windows key + Tab.
2. Select New desktop if only one desktop is present.
3. Return to:
   Settings > Personalization > Background
4. Confirm Personalize your background is set to Picture.
5. Right-click a picture in Recent images again.

If the individual-desktop options still do not appear, use the primary method: right-click the target desktop thumbnail in Task View and select Choose background.

You have multiple monitors and want a unique wallpaper for every monitor on every virtual desktop​

Windows does not support combining those two configurations. You must choose one approach:

• Use a distinct wallpaper per virtual desktop, shared across the attached displays, or
• Use different wallpapers per monitor without relying on separate virtual-desktop wallpaper assignments.

For the first approach, use Task View > right-click desktop > Choose background. For the second, close the extra virtual desktops, then configure background images by monitor from Settings > Personalization > Background.

A work or school PC keeps forcing a wallpaper​

Your organization may manage desktop backgrounds through policy or device management. Signs include a wallpaper that reverts immediately, Settings options that are unavailable, or a message that some settings are managed by your organization.
Do not edit the Registry or try to bypass organizational policy. Verify whether the device is enrolled in a work or school organization under:
Settings > Accounts > Access work or school
If the PC is managed, contact the organization’s IT administrator and ask whether desktop wallpaper policy is enforced.
