The Chicken Invaders Collection preview opens on Xbox and Windows PC
Xbox Wire, Microsoft's official Xbox news site, announced the preview in a post by an Xbox program manager. It says that starting today, Xbox Insiders can join the Chicken Invaders Collection preview from InterAction studios on Xbox consoles and Windows PC. The post frames the collection as a first for the series. For the first time since the series debuted in 1999, the Chicken Invaders saga is together in one collection, and Microsoft highlights fast arcade shooting, large boss fights and an original orchestral soundtrack.
Those feature descriptions come from the announcement. They are not results from anyone's hands-on testing. The same is true of the multiplayer line: Microsoft says you can save the world alone or team up with up to 8 friends. The post doesn't say whether that means eight players in total or eight plus the host. It also doesn't say whether multiplayer is online, local or cross-platform between Xbox and PC. Anyone planning group sessions should find out during the preview rather than assume.
Microsoft is clear about what the preview is for. Joining gives players a chance to take on the invasion, and help the development team prepare the collection for release. Techtroduce, whose coverage appears to draw on the same Xbox Wire post, also stresses that the Xbox Insider build is not being presented as the final release.
Steam testing pointed toward the Xbox release in advance
The Xbox preview follows months of public testing on another platform. In June 2026, InterAction studios posted on its own community forum that a Steam beta was coming. It described the build as a collection of Episodes 1-5 and a stepping stone to the Xbox release later this year. The studio added that it is currently not planned to have a stand-alone release of the Collection on Steam later.
That background helps explain the order of events. The collection was tested with PC players on Steam first, and the Xbox Insider preview is the next step toward the console launch the studio talked about in June. Keep the two tests apart, though. The Steam beta notes describe that build. They don't confirm that the Xbox preview has the same content, save behaviour or technical requirements. Xbox Wire doesn't list which episodes the Xbox demo contains.
The move to Xbox is notable given where the series has lived. The first Chicken Invaders came out on July 24, 1999, and the series has mostly shipped on Windows, OS X, Linux, iOS, Android and Windows Phone, according to Wikipedia's overview. It was created by Greek indie developer Konstantinos Prouskas. The first game was a fixed shooter reminiscent of the original Space Invaders, of which it is a parody. Now a Windows-born series is reaching Xbox console owners through Microsoft's own testing channel, while also offering a Windows PC version.
How to join through the Xbox Insider Hub
Microsoft gives the same enrollment steps for console and PC. There are two stages: registering for the preview, then installing the demo from the Store.
- On your Xbox console or Windows PC, sign in and open the Xbox Insider Hub app. If necessary, install the Xbox Insider Hub from the Store first.
- Go to Previews, then Chicken Invaders Collection.
- Select Join.
- Wait for registration to finish. The Hub then sends you to the Store to install Chicken Invaders Collection Demo.
If it worked, the Store opens on the demo's listing after registration and lets you install it. If you search the Store for the demo before registration has finished, you may not find it, because the posted flow has the Hub send you there only after sign-up completes. Microsoft doesn't give troubleshooting steps for a preview that's missing from the Hub, or any system requirements or install size for the Windows version. Those gaps matter most for PC users on limited hardware or storage, who will only find out when the Store listing appears.
Feedback runs through Insider Hub surveys and Report a Problem
The preview exists to gather feedback, and Microsoft names two routes for it. General impressions go through the Insider Hub: players should complete the Chicken Invaders Collection surveys available in the Xbox Insider Hub to share your experience with the team. Microsoft says that your feedback can help InterAction studios as they prepare the game for release. The post doesn't say how many surveys there are or when they'll appear.
For bugs on console, Microsoft points to the built-in reporting tool:
- Hold down the Home (Xbox) button on your controller.
- Select Report a problem.
- Pick the Games category and the Chicken Invaders Collection Demo subcategory.
- Fill out the form with the appropriate details to help our investigation.
These instructions apply only to problems while playing on Xbox. Microsoft doesn't give a matching bug-reporting route for the Windows PC version, and the controller steps shouldn't be assumed to work on PC. PC testers can still use the Insider Hub surveys, which the announcement treats as the main feedback channel on both platforms.
What this means for you
If you're already an Xbox Insider and like arcade shooters, you can join now on whichever device you prefer. The rest of the announcement is mostly about what the preview can't promise yet. Microsoft hasn't said whether demo progress carries over to the finished game, how long the preview runs, or when or at what price the collection launches. Play it as a test build and report what breaks. If you're only interested in the finished product, there's no reason to join.
- The Chicken Invaders Collection preview is open to Xbox Insiders on Xbox consoles and Windows PC as of September 24, 2026. It is not generally available.
- Enrollment happens in the Xbox Insider Hub under Previews, and the game installs from the Store as Chicken Invaders Collection Demo once registration completes.
- Feedback goes through Insider Hub surveys, and console bugs go through Report a Problem under Games, then Chicken Invaders Collection Demo.
- The earlier Steam beta covered Episodes 1–5, according to InterAction studios, but its details are not confirmed for the Xbox build.
- The "up to 8 friends" multiplayer claim leaves open whether play is online, local or cross-platform, so test it before planning group sessions.
- No release date, end date, system requirements or progress-carryover policy has been announced.
The collection has moved in steps: a Steam beta in June that the developer called preparation for Xbox, and now a Microsoft-run Insider preview across console and PC. The studio said in June that it planned an Xbox release later in 2026, and the preview surveys are the last formal chance for players to shape that version before launch. A release date is the next thing to watch for.
