Microsoft's October 2 blog post is not the feature's debut. A Microsoft message-center announcement from June 16, 2026, said the feature would reach public preview on June 30, 2026. The release plan and the message-center note give different preview dates (June 22 and June 30), so check your own tenant instead of assuming a date. The new post builds on that earlier announcement. It lays out the supervisor workflow in detail.
Why this matters
Traditional dashboards refresh at scheduled intervals and re-render entire views, which can delay insights during active monitoring. Real-time streaming analytics uses an event-driven architecture to deliver live metric updates.
Microsoft has not published a latency figure. Treat "live" as a design intent, not a service-level guarantee. The June announcement describes metrics changing "in seconds." That is marketing language, not a commitment.
For admins and IT decision-makers, the notable point is that this is not only a reporting refresh. Supervisors can act from the same screen, so permissions, routing rules, and policy all matter.
The five views
The feature applies to Dynamics 365 Contact Center only. The analytics experience has five tabs:
| View | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Wallboard | Consolidated operational metrics, queue health, representative availability, service performance |
| Assisted Service | Detailed performance analysis, trends, service metrics, conversation insights |
| Queues | Queue-level backlog, wait times, service levels, abandon rates |
| Representatives | Availability, presence, workload, performance |
| Conversations | Active, queued and completed conversations, with management actions |
Filters include Period, Channel and Queues.
Live versus aggregated metrics
"Real time" does not mean every number is an instantaneous snapshot. Microsoft separates two metric types:
- Live metrics reflect the current state and update continuously. The documentation lists active conversations, queue backlog, online representatives and longest wait time. They carry a Live tag in the interface.
- Aggregated metrics summarize a selected time period. Examples are service level, abandon rate and average speed to answer.
This affects how you read the wallboard. The Period filter applies only to aggregated metrics. Live metrics ignore time-based filters. They respond only to channel, queue and other non-time filters. If you change the period and the backlog number doesn't move, that is by design.
Trend arrows follow their own rhythm. Microsoft says they compare a metric with the previous measurement interval and refresh every five minutes. A red ▲ +0.4% on abandon rate means a 0.4 percentage point increase since the prior interval. It is not a change over the whole selected period.
Wallboard cards
The wallboard includes cards for:
- Active conversations, with a split between representatives and virtual agents
- Online representatives
- Queue backlog, meaning conversations pending assignment
- Current longest wait time, meaning the longest wait among conversations still pending assignment in the selected queue
- Service level, defined as the percentage of conversations answered within 20 seconds
- Abandon rate and average speed to answer
- A presence panel with Available, Busy, Busy – DND, Away and Offline, plus any custom statuses
The 20-second service-level definition is worth noting. If your organization measures service level against a different target, you may need to reconcile these numbers with your existing reports.
Thresholds
Metrics carry predefined thresholds with three visual states:
| Status | Meaning | Display |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | Within expected range | Default |
| At risk | Approaching critical levels | Amber background, "At risk" tag |
| Critical | Outside acceptable thresholds | Red background, "Critical" tag |
On every dashboard except the wallboard, selecting See details shows the metric definition, calculation, threshold ranges and a trendline. Microsoft calls the thresholds predefined. The sources reviewed don't say whether customers can change them, so confirm that in your environment before building procedures around specific cut-offs.
From monitoring to action
Microsoft frames the workflow as monitor, detect, act. The action controls are the part that deserves care.
Representatives view. It shows availability, answered-versus-offered assignments, unanswered assignments, active conversations, presence duration and capacity. Microsoft's example capacity figure of 6/15 is illustrative, not a default or limit. Supervisors can select one or more representatives and:
- Assign, modify or remove queue memberships to move capacity toward a pressured queue
- Set a new presence state, for example after a missed status change, to prevent misrouting
Conversations view. Conversations are grouped by queue, with All, Ongoing (open, active, waiting and wrap-up) and Closed tabs. You can search by subject, customer and representative. A bulk toolbar offers three actions:
- Assign conversations to a representative
- Transfer them to another queue or representative
- Force close them manually
Force close in particular is a blunt instrument. Microsoft doesn't say which actions are available in which conversation states, so test this in a sandbox. Decide who gets the Supervisor role with that in mind.
Setup checklist
Microsoft's prerequisites are:
- Omnichannel for Contact Center is configured and in use.
- Customer interaction channels, such as voice, chat or other asynchronous messaging, are set up and generating live interaction data.
- Users have the Omnichannel Supervisor role. It is needed both to view dashboards and to take action.
Access is through a supervisor-preview portal address. The address depends on whether the environment is production or first release, and on the organization's region. Microsoft publishes separate links for regions including the US, Europe, the UK, Canada, Australia, Brazil, India, Japan, Switzerland, the UAE, Germany, France and Asia. Use the one that matches your tenant. A single URL won't serve everyone.
Success looks like this: the tabs load, live-tagged metrics change as interactions arrive, and your supervisors can perform queue and presence changes. If the dashboards are empty, check the prerequisites first. A common cause is channels that aren't generating live interaction data.
Responsible use and compliance
Microsoft is explicit about limits. The feature should not be used to make decisions affecting an employee's employment, including compensation, rewards, seniority or other rights or entitlements. Customers remain responsible for complying with laws on employee analytics and on monitoring, recording and storing communications. They must adequately notify customers that communications may be monitored, recorded or stored. Where the law requires it, they must obtain consent. Microsoft also encourages organizations to tell their representatives.
Representative-level data such as unanswered assignments and presence duration sits one policy decision away from performance management. Legal and HR teams should set boundaries before the rollout, not after.
Analysis
Real-time supervision tools tend to look best in demos. Microsoft's "Alexandra" scenario is a fictional persona. It illustrates the workflow and is not a customer case study. The claimed benefits are faster response to queue pressure, less context switching and staffing decisions based on current demand. Those are intended outcomes. Microsoft has published no measured results.
Practical advice:
- Pilot with a small supervisor group in a non-critical queue.
- Train supervisors on the live-versus-aggregated distinction. This prevents misreading the wallboard.
- Document who may change presence, queue membership and conversation state.
- Don't base production procedures on preview behavior. Microsoft's release plan listed no general availability date at the time of writing.
- Watch the documentation, which Microsoft says is subject to change.
Microsoft has also said it plans to extend this persona-first approach to contact center representatives and administrators.
