When a major survival crafting game graduates from Steam Early Access into version 1.0 alongside a console debut, the first question for any split friend group is simple: can PC and console players share the same world? For Enshrouded, which launched its 1.0 release on PC and PlayStation 5 on October 15, 2026, the answer right now is no.

Keen Games confirmed in its pre-launch Steam FAQ that Enshrouded is not cross-platform at launch. While the studio says it is actively working on bringing cross-platform play to the game, it has provided no estimate for how long that development will take. For PC players on Windows, PlayStation 5 owners, and anyone waiting on the Xbox ecosystem, here is how multiplayer, dedicated servers, and platform boundaries actually work in version 1.0.

Before buying extra copies or spinning up a Windows dedicated server for a mixed-platform group, it helps to look at the verified platform boundaries as they stand at the 1.0 launch:

Platform CombinationCrossplay Available?Multiplayer Capacity & Requirements
PC (Steam) + PC (Steam)YesUp to 16 players via player-hosted sessions or dedicated servers
PS5 + PS5YesUp to 8 online players; PlayStation Plus required for online play
PC + PS5NoIn development by Keen Games; no current ETA
Xbox Series X|S (Any Combination)NoVersion not released at 1.0 launch; reported by gaming outlets and server hosts for spring 2027

Section Summary: PC and PlayStation 5 operate in completely separate multiplayer pools at launch, with different maximum player caps and no delivery date for crossplay.

Keen Games' Official Position on Crossplay

Nothing torpedoes a weekend co-op plan quite like buying a game on two different storefronts only to discover the lobbies cannot see each other. In its official Steam announcements leading up to the October 15 launch, Keen Games addressed the issue directly:

"Enshrouded will not be cross-platform at launch, but we know many of your friendships have survived years of console wars. We are working on bringing cross-platform play to Enshrouded, but have no current estimate on how much time it will take us."

Earlier in the release cycle, Keen Games technical director Julien Koenen also told Eurogamer.de in July 2026 that crossplay would not be ready in time for the October 15 launch, according to reporting cited by Shockbyte.

From a practical standpoint, "in development with no current estimate" means players should treat Enshrouded as a single-platform commitment for the foreseeable future. If your group wants to play together today, everyone needs to be on the same platform. Waiting on an unscheduled patch is a gamble, especially when Keen Games has not published a technical roadmap or confirmed which platform combinations will be linked first once the feature is ready.

PC Multiplayer and Windows Dedicated Server Details

Because Enshrouded spent its entire Early Access period on Steam beginning in January 2024, the Windows PC version offers the largest and most flexible multiplayer setup.

According to the official Steam store listing, the PC edition supports online co-op for up to 16 players in a shared world. For hardware planning, Steam lists minimum specifications of a 64-bit Windows 10 setup, an Intel Core i5-6400 or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X processor, 16 GB of RAM, a 6 GB VRAM GPU (GTX 1060, RX 580, or Intel Arc A380), and 60 GB of storage, stepping up to an Intel Core i7-8700 or Ryzen 7 2700X with an RTX 2070 Super, RX 6700 XT, or Arc A770 (with an SSD recommended) for recommended play.

Hosting and Dedicated Servers on Windows

PC groups can either host sessions directly from the game or run a standalone dedicated server. According to Games.gg, players joining on PC can use the in-game server browser, filter via "Show dedicated server," and star favorite servers to keep them at the top of the list.

For groups that do not want world access tied to a single host staying online, Keen Games' official Zendesk documentation outlines how the Steam dedicated server works on Windows:

  1. Purchasing Enshrouded on Steam automatically unlocks the Enshrouded Dedicated Server in the Steam library's Tools section (you must enable the "Tools" filter checkmark in your library to see it).
  2. After downloading the tool, Keen recommends not using Steam's "Launch" button. Instead, right-click the entry in Steam, select Properties, open Installed Files, and click Browse to open the folder in Windows Explorer.
  3. Run Enshrouded Dedicated Server.exe (or enshrouded_server.exe) once from Windows Explorer. That initial run generates the enshrouded_server.json configuration file in the installation directory.
  4. Open enshrouded_server.json with any text editor to configure parameters such as "name", "saveDirectory" (defaulting to ./savegame), "queryPort" (defaulting to 15637), and "slotCount", which accepts values from 1 to 16.

Keen's configuration guide notes that every additional player slot increases CPU and RAM load on the host machine, advising administrators to lower slotCount if hardware bottlenecks occur. Furthermore, Keen's 1.0 patch notes on Steam highlight a key administration difference between player-hosted games and dedicated servers: while in-game hosts can now set a default permission password and promote or demote individual players via the social menu, dedicated servers continue to rely on their configured user groups and passwords rather than live in-game promotion.

Crucially, running a dedicated server does not bypass the crossplay wall. A PS5 player cannot connect to a Steam-based dedicated server.

Section Summary: The Windows PC build on Steam supports up to 16 players and includes a configurable Windows dedicated server executable, but those servers remain strictly PC-only at launch.

PlayStation 5 Multiplayer Differences

The PlayStation 5 version launched alongside the PC 1.0 release on October 15, 2026, complete with PS5 Pro enhancements and DualSense vibration and trigger support, according to the PlayStation Store listing.

However, the console multiplayer setup differs from the PC version in two major ways:

  • Lower Player Cap: The PlayStation Store specifies that the PS5 version supports up to 8 online players, half the 16-player maximum available on Steam.
  • Subscription Requirement: An active PlayStation Plus subscription is required for online multiplayer on PS5 (solo play remains available offline without a subscription).

Because there is no cross-platform bridge at 1.0, PS5 players can only join sessions with other PlayStation players.

What About Xbox Series X|S, Cross-Save, and Pricing?

For players in the Microsoft console ecosystem, Enshrouded did not release on Xbox Series X|S on October 15. Coverage from Games.gg, Survival Servers, and Shockbyte notes that the Xbox Series X|S release is planned for spring 2027, with Survival Servers quoting a Keen Games press release stating that hitting the studio's quality and performance targets on Xbox required additional time. Games.gg also notes that no Xbox One version has been announced. Because Keen Games has not released an official crossplay compatibility matrix, any claims about when or how Xbox will connect with PC or PS5 remain unconfirmed.

Cross-Save and Pricing Realities

It is also important to separate crossplay (sharing a live multiplayer session across hardware) from cross-save / cross-progression (carrying your character and world save from one platform to another) and cross-buy (getting a console copy when buying on PC).

  • No Confirmed Cross-Save or Cross-Buy: Neither the Steam store page, the PlayStation Store listing, nor Keen Games' launch FAQ announces cross-save or cross-buy support between Steam and PS5. If you start a character on PS5 today and later move to PC—or vice versa—there is no official mechanism to transfer your progression.
  • Store Pricing: Both the Steam and PlayStation Store listings carry a standard base price of $39.99 (with both storefronts running a 10% introductory discount down to $35.99 through October 29, 2026; on PlayStation, that discount requires PS Plus). Players who already bought Enshrouded during Steam Early Access receive the 1.0 update automatically at no additional cost.

Practical Guidance for Co-Op Groups

If your friend group is trying to decide where to build your base in Embervale right now, the decision comes down to group size and hardware uniformity:

  • Coordinate before buying: Do not split purchases across Steam and PS5 hoping for a quick crossplay patch. Pick one platform where every member of your group can play today.
  • Check your headcount: If your group has 9 to 16 players, or if you want persistent 24/7 world hosting via a Windows dedicated server, PC (Steam) is your only option.
  • Console groups up to 8: If everyone in your circle is on PS5 and your group is 8 players or fewer, the PS5 release handles co-op natively so long as everyone has PlayStation Plus.

Until Keen Games puts a firm date on its cross-platform update, keeping your entire party on the same storefront is the only way to survive the Shroud together.
