A stereoscopic first-person shooter view shows a soldier reloading amid a ruined city battle.
A fan-made virtual reality mod for the PC version of Gears of War: E-Day has surfaced. It is early, unreleased and unofficial. The creator, posting as @rockonthehillc, has shown real gameplay in a trailer. Windows Central reports that the creator showed the mod on X, with full body tracking, manual weapon reloads and more. The German outlet XboxDynasty confirms the project and gives a fuller feature list.

If you own a PC VR headset and a Gears habit, this is worth watching. Don't expect to install it yet.

A stereoscopic first-person shooter view shows a soldier reloading amid a ruined city battle. What the mod claims to do

XboxDynasty describes it as a free VR mod that is currently in development. Its first trailer shows real gameplay from an early build. The features listed in the coverage are:

  • VR support across all campaign missions.
  • Six degrees of freedom (6DOF), meaning free head and body movement in the virtual space.
  • Stereoscopic rendering for VR headsets.
  • Full-body inverse kinematics, which works out body posture from your VR movements.
  • Manual reloading with hand movements, plus manual weapon switching.
  • Two-handed aiming and cover combat adapted for VR.

These are the developer's claims, relayed through press coverage and a trailer. I have not tested the mod, and nobody has independently verified it. A short trailer cannot show whether all of this works reliably across a whole campaign. It also says nothing about comfort options, which matter a great deal in a game built around cover and quick movement.

What we don't know

  • Release date: none has been given. The creator says the mod will be released free once development is finished.
  • Hardware and compatibility: no requirements or support list have been published in the coverage I could review.
  • Quest 2: the Windows Central writer said the trailer made him want to dust off his Oculus Quest 2. That is a personal remark, not a compatibility statement. Nothing I reviewed says the mod supports that headset, or any particular one.
  • Installation: I found no download link or install procedure, so there is nothing to follow yet.

This is not an official feature

Xbox's product page lists E-Day as a third-person cover shooter from The Coalition. Wikipedia notes the game launched on October 6, 2026 for Windows and Xbox Series X/S, after a premium early access period from October 1. Xbox's listing describes the campaign as solo, split-screen co-op on console, or online co-op for up to four players. It mentions no VR support.

The mod therefore changes a third-person, cover-focused game into something it was not designed to be. That makes the work technically interesting. Steam users were already asking for VR support, and some argued that a third-person shooter is not ideal for VR and that a first-person Gears would lose what defines it. The mod's cover combat and full-body IK look like an attempt to answer that objection. Whether the attempt works is something only hands-on testing can show.

The first-person spin-off idea

Windows Central's piece also argues that Xbox should try a first-person or horror Gears game. That is the writer's opinion. No such project has been announced. Treat it as commentary, not news.

Practical takeaways for PC players

  1. Wait for the release. There is no public build, so avoid any download that claims to be this mod. Unofficial mod files are a known malware route.
  2. Check requirements when they appear. UE5 games are demanding enough on a monitor. Rendering two eyes at VR refresh rates is a much heavier load, so expect it to need strong hardware. This is my general industry judgment, not a figure from the developer.
  3. Expect rough edges. The creator calls it an early work in progress.
  4. Mind multiplayer. Mods that alter a game's rendering and input may not suit online modes, and the coverage says nothing on the question. Look for developer guidance on this before trying it online.

The mod looks more substantial than a concept video, given the reported campaign-wide scope and VR-specific interactions. For now it remains a promising early project from one developer.
