What's launching, and where
Xbox's official listing says the game is a third-person cover shooter. It is scheduled for release on October 6, 2026, for Windows and Xbox Series X/S. Premium Edition owners got up to five days of early access starting October 1. That is why Steam player counts were public before the global launch.
For PC players, the packet's access details are:
- Storefronts: Microsoft Store and Steam.
- Game Pass: included on day one with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.
- Play Anywhere: a single purchase covers console and PC, with shared progression and achievements.
- Pricing on the Xbox page: Standard is $69.99 and Premium is $99.99. There is a $30 upgrade from Standard to Premium. Prices may vary by region and change.
- Online play: online campaign co-op, Horde Siege and Versus require a Game Pass tier that includes online multiplayer. Two-player split-screen is console-only.
The story is set 14 years before the original Gears of War. It follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as the Locust Horde first emerges. The campaign can be played solo, in split-screen co-op on console, or online with up to four players.
What changed in the formula
Xbox's own copy backs several of the claims in the dlcompare piece. It promises a darker, grittier tone and reimagined enemies. It also promises cover-based combat with "modernized movement and traversal" that add verticality, and a rebuild in Unreal Engine 5 targeting 4K and up to 60 FPS. A 4K display is required for 4K output.
That is marketing language from the publisher, not a review verdict. The dlcompare article goes further. It says movement feels more fluid, environments are larger with optional objectives and collectibles, and the game "reinvents" the formula. I could not confirm those points against firsthand testing or primary sources. Treat them as one outlet's impression until full reviews land.
GameSpot's campaign review offers a more mixed take. Its reviewer called the game distinctly Gears and said he had a good time. He also called the story disappointing and the open areas fairly dull. That sits awkwardly beside the "larger spaces" pitch, and it supports dlcompare's own caution that more options can slow down veterans.
Horde Siege
Horde Siege is the biggest multiplayer change. Windows Central's July preview, from a hands-on demo session, described a mode with a new twelve-player cooperative mode. The preview said it uses large maps with dynamic objectives, defensible locations, raid-boss style events and extraction finales.
That conflicts with dlcompare's wording, which describes four-player squads and "multiple squads" without giving the 12-player total. The two fit together if the 12 players are three four-player squads, which is how the preview framed it. Dlcompare's "four classes" claim is not confirmed by the sources I have, so I won't repeat it as fact.
Versus returns with new maps and refined 4v4 modes, per Xbox.
The October 5 patch
The Coalition's notes say the update came ahead of global release and was available that day. They group fixes by area:
- Stability and performance: various stability, performance, hardware compatibility and reporting improvements. The notes give no numbers and name no specific hardware.
- Matchmaking and online: some Versus Social matches stuck on "Waiting for players" were addressed. Xbox authentication handling was also improved when the system clock is significantly wrong, and online-session stability was improved.
- The "Bilefrog-Kalona" error: GameSpot explains that this is a split-screen problem. A player is signed out of online services after the console or PC is suspended. It then triggers when they try to use Quick Resume to rejoin.
- Campaign: fixes cover join-in-progress players receiving War Journal progress and Forge rewards earned before they joined, and players staying attached to turrets when a cinematic began. Missing Forge Discovery progress was fixed for some join-in-progress players. Act 2 Chapter 2 and Act 4 objective issues were also addressed.
- Horde Siege: a Siege Blitz Secure objective blocker and an extraction helicopter that could fail to appear during a Downtown West Blitz mission.
- Versus: a Demolition bomb could get stuck in a defusing state if a player was eliminated while starting the defuse.
- UI: one possible cause of the UI repeatedly trying to claim the same Challenge Mail reward was addressed, and the Online Diagnostic text was adjusted.
The wording is cautious throughout, with phrases like "addressed an issue" and "one possible cause". That means some of these may be mitigations, not guaranteed cures. If you hit the clock-skew authentication problem, check that Windows time is syncing correctly. The patch notes do not give a procedure for this.
The patch stacks on top of the earlier early-access release. Windows Central and Gfinity report that one covered weapon and movement tuning, an FOV slider, HDR calibration, an unlimited FPS option on PC, and a fix for graphics settings resetting between launches.
The Steam number, in context
SteamDB records an all-time peak of 20,374 concurrent players on October 2, 2026. Dlcompare says that is almost double Gears 5's Steam peak. I confirmed the E-Day figure, but I did not verify the Gears 5 and Reloaded comparisons here.
Three caveats apply:
- The figure counts Steam only. It leaves out Xbox console players and Microsoft Store and Game Pass PC players.
- It reflects early access, which only Premium buyers could enter.
- It is a peak, not sales or retention.
SteamDB's page also showed a "Mostly Positive" user rating of about 75.85% across roughly 3,000 reviews. It listed 10,118 players in game at the time of capture. Early-access reviews are a narrow sample.
Bottom line
For PC players, the practical points are simple. The game is on Steam and the Microsoft Store, Game Pass covers it, and the patch is already out. Install it before the first launch-day session. Go in knowing that "reinvents the formula" is the publisher's pitch and one outlet's impression, and reviews are still mixed.
