About this tag
File sharing on Windows spans a wide range of methods, from built-in tools like Nearby Sharing and SMB to third-party utilities such as LocalSend. Windows 11 continues to refine the experience, with recent updates renaming Drag Tray to Drop Tray and expanding multi-file sharing capabilities. For home networks, secure setup involves enabling network discovery, configuring NTFS permissions, and using password-protected access. On Windows Server 2022, admins can manage shares via GUI or PowerShell, balancing share and NTFS permissions. Security remains critical, with guidance advising against enabling SMB1 due to vulnerabilities. Cross-device sharing also extends to Android through Phone Link, offering clipboard sync and file transfer.
