Having left Windows Update running for a day and a night - over 24 hours - it still displays "Checking for updates..." with the progress bar happily drifting from left to right.
I was advised (elsewhere to:

Windows Updates has stopped working. I've tried everything I can think of, trying to run Update after each of the steps shown below. Needless to say, my Update History is also gone after running these steps.
1) Ran KB947821 v34 x64 and restarted
2) Ran WuReset For Windows 7 & 8 and restarted...

My system has corrupt files according to the "sfc /scannow" command and after running it 3 times I am suppose to use the windows readiness tool, and install additional updates, the first time this update came up it installed and i reset the system, running the .exe again the same update appears...
