recovery options

I needed to clear up a problem with start up and resorted to defaulting to factory settings. I lost all photo files and other favorite dowload sites. I have attempted a few different recovery programs without success. Can these 1000 plus images be recovered?

I keep getting Unspecified Error - even from Safe Mode and different restore points. BTW, is there a foolproof way to get into Safe Mode? I have to keep trying and trying and trying until something 'clicks.'
