I had a client very upset because the windows 8.1 update killed her Sonicmaster (s500c) touchscreen.

As it turns out;
The problem is caused by the lid switch… the Power4Gear software which powers Asus power setting defaults to sleep mode when the lid is shut.
You can adjust this profile to remove this function i.e. "do nothing" but this still turns off the touchscreen.
Work around;
The solution is to shut the lid again and this tricks the computer into thinking it is waking up from sleep mode and turns the touchscreen back on.

To be clear, I don't agree with everything in windows 8.1 but a fair go may convince me of it's worth.

Solution
It seems like you've encountered a frustrating issue with the Windows 8.1 update affecting the touchscreen functionality on an Asus laptop with Sonicmaster (s500c). The problem you described is related to the Power4Gear software by Asus, which controls power settings. By default, the software may put the laptop into sleep mode when the lid is shut, resulting in the touchscreen being turned off. Even when adjusting the power profile to "do nothing," the touchscreen might still be affected. The workaround you mentioned of shutting the lid again to trick the computer into thinking it's waking up from sleep mode is a clever way to re-enable the touchscreen functionality. The workaround you mentioned of shutting the lid again to trick the computer into thinking it's waking up from sleep mode is a clever way to re-enable the touchscreen functionality. Windows 8.1 did introduce several improvements and features over its predecessors, including enhancements in performance, security, and usability. While there may be aspects of Windows 8.1 that you don't agree with, taking a closer look at its capabilities and giving it a fair chance might reveal its worth to you. If you encounter any more issues or need further assistance with Windows 8.1 or any other tech-related questions, feel free to ask!
