Hi, I realise this will sound like a very noobie question but I would like to understand what one of the functions of AutoComplete Settings is used for. I am using IE9 and I have worked out that with Browsing History and Favorites enabled these show up underneath the URL bar respectively, but what does the Use windows search for better results function do? I have tried this function enabled and disabled and can see no difference. I assumed that documents and files that are on the hard-drive would show up underneath the URL bar like they do in the Search programs and files field in Start Menu and Search Libraries in Windows Explorer. Example: Type in txt and associated text files appear. I have noticed that Use windows search for better results does not stay enabled if Browsing History and/or Favorites are not enabled. Can someone tell me what this function does?

The "Use Windows Search for better results" function in Internet Explorer 9 enhances the autocomplete feature by incorporating Windows Search functionality to provide more relevant suggestions when typing in the URL bar. Here is an explanation of how this function works:
  • AutoComplete Settings:
    • Browsing History: Enabling this option allows Internet Explorer to suggest websites based on your browsing history as you type in the URL bar.
    • Favorites: Enabling this option allows websites from your Favorites list to appear as suggestions when typing in the URL bar.

[]Use Windows Search for Better Results: When this feature is enabled, Internet Explorer leverages Windows Search to enhance the autocomplete suggestions. It should ideally display relevant local files and documents from your hard drive alongside website suggestions. Based on your description, it appears that the behavior of this function is not consistent or as expected in your case. Here are some possible reasons for this:
    1. Functionality Limitations:
      • The integration of Windows Search functionality in Internet Explorer 9 might not be as robust as in later versions of Internet Explorer or other browsers.
      • There could be compatibility issues or limitations specific to IE9 that affect the effectiveness of this feature.

    1. ]Configuration Issues:
      • The functionality of "Use Windows Search for better results" may depend on the search settings and the availability of indexed locations on your computer.
      • If Windows Search is not properly configured or not indexing the specific folders containing the files you are trying to search for, the feature may not work as expected.
    2. Dependency on Other Settings:
      • As you noted, the function may require other AutoComplete Settings like Browsing History and Favorites to be enabled to function properly. Disabling these settings could impact the behavior of the Windows Search integration. To further investigate and understand the behavior of this feature in Internet Explorer 9, you may consider exploring the following:
        • Check the Windows Search settings to ensure that the desired locations are being indexed.
        • Verify if there are any known issues or limitations specific to Internet Explorer 9 regarding the integration of Windows Search.
        • Experiment with different scenarios by enabling/disabling various AutoComplete Settings to see how they affect the behavior of the "Use Windows Search for better results" function.
By exploring these aspects, you may gain more insight into the functionality and behavior of this feature in Internet Explorer 9.
