I created a backup on an old drive. I then realized there was a lot of junk on the drive I could remove so I just reformated it hoping to back up windows 7 again after the drive was formatted. When I went to control panel and selected Backup and Restore after formatting my backup hard drive, it just said

An internal error has occured
Catastrophic failure (0x8000FFFF)

I don't know why deleting this backup would break the functionality of windows 7 backup and restore.

Anyone know how to fix this?

Found the solution.

Resetting certain registry values that are depending on there being a valid backup configuration. When I deleted mine, it lost the settings it was relying on to display and run Back up and Restore.

I used a txt file I found Backup User and System Files - Reset to Default Configuration - Windows 7 Forums.

The registry entry is attached if the link goes bad. Just change the ".txt" to ".reg" so it will automatically edit the registry.
