My adult granddaughter—who has a disability (CP)—has played Wizard101 since she was a tweener. Right now, she plays the game on an HP laptop that's a couple of years old and shipped with Windows 10. It's not up to running Windows 11, and I'd like to get her a new (but not expensive) laptop that comes with Win11. I'm looking online at the HP Stream 14" HD BrightView Laptop. Her current machine (also an inexpensive HP) seems to run the game just fine, so I'm pretty sure this new model (at $388) will handle it.
The HP Stream 14" comes with Windows 11S, which restricts the user to downloading exclusively from the Microsoft Store. I visited the Store, and as far as I can tell, the Store does NOT offer anything from Kingsisle Entertainment, the maker of Wizard101. Therefore, with this particular HP machine, I'll need to remove Windows 11S before I can download and install her game. That's fine with me.
I'd like to hear from people who are familiar with Windows 11S and this particular laptop. Regarding the Microsoft Store: Did I miss something while searching for Wizard101? Will this laptop have trouble running the game? It doesn't appear to make big demands on resources. I'm not a gamer of any kind, and besides I use a MacBook for my own work and play.

Good question — and yes, there are a couple of red flags with that specific kind of low-cost HP Stream.
So if you buy a Windows 11 Home in S mode laptop, the practical process is:
However, I would be careful here:
The Walmart listing you referenced shows:
No, I do not think that HP Stream is an especially good value at roughly $388.
At that price, I would strongly prefer a laptop with:
If you want, I can help you do the next step properly: I can look up 2 or 3 better Windows 11 laptops in your budget that should handle Wizard101 more comfortably.
Short answer
- Windows 11 in S mode is not a deal-breaker. You can switch out of S mode for free through Microsoft’s Activation page, but it is one-way. After that, she can install normal desktop apps from outside the Microsoft Store.
- You probably did not miss Wizard101 in the Store in the way you meant it. Wizard101 is officially available for Windows computers via download from KingsIsle/Wizard101, which strongly suggests the normal Windows PC route is still the standard one.
- My bigger concern is the laptop itself, not S mode. A Celeron N4120 with 64 GB of storage is very entry-level, and 64 GB fills up fast on Windows 11 with updates, Office, browser cache, and a game launcher. The CPU and storage are the weak points. (walmart.com)
About the Microsoft Store / Windows 11 S
You are basically correct about S mode: it allows apps from the Microsoft Store only. If an app is not available there in a usable Windows-PC form, you must switch out of S mode to install it. Microsoft says switching out of S mode is free, permanent, and done through Settings > System > Activation > Go to the Store. So if you buy a Windows 11 Home in S mode laptop, the practical process is:
- Turn on the laptop.
- Complete Windows setup.
- Open Settings > System > Activation.
- Choose the option to switch out of S mode.
- Open the Microsoft Store page that appears.
- Click Get.
Did you miss Wizard101 in the Microsoft Store?
Based on current web results, Wizard101 does appear in Microsoft Store listings in some Microsoft catalog pages, often shown as “Wizard101” or “Wizard101 (Game Preview)”.However, I would be careful here:
- Those Store results may reflect regional/catalog listings or an Xbox-related listing.
- KingsIsle’s official site still points users to download Wizard101 for Windows computers from their own site, which is the clearest primary-source indication of the normal PC install path.
- Because of that, I would not buy an S-mode machine assuming the Store listing alone will solve this.
Will that HP Stream 14 run Wizard101?
Probably yes at a basic level, but I would not call it a good buy at that price. The Walmart listing you referenced shows:
- Intel Celeron N4120
- 8 GB RAM
- Intel HD Graphics 600
- 64 GB storage
- 14-inch HD display (walmart.com)
The real landmines with this laptop
If you want the plain truth, these are the concerns I would focus on:1. 64 GB storage is very tight
After Windows 11, updates, Office, temporary files, and browser/game cache, free space can get cramped quickly. That can lead to:- sluggish updates
- failed feature updates
- constant “low storage” management
- frustration if she saves photos, downloads, or game files locally
2. Celeron N4120 is very modest
It is fine for:- web browsing
- Office
- light games
3. Marketplace listing caution
The Walmart page shown is sold by a third-party Marketplace seller, not necessarily directly by Walmart or HP. That means specs, bundled accessories, warranty handling, and support can be less straightforward. (walmart.com)My recommendation
If the goal is:- low cost
- Windows 11
- reliable Wizard101 play
- less hassle for your granddaughter
- Intel Core i3 / AMD Ryzen 3 or better
- 8 GB RAM minimum
- 256 GB SSD minimum
- Windows 11 Home preferred
- 1080p display if possible
If you still buy the HP Stream
If you decide to go with it anyway, I would do this:- Confirm it is Windows 11 Home in S mode, not some unusual locked configuration.
- Switch out of S mode immediately.
- Run Windows Update fully.
- Install Wizard101 from the official KingsIsle/Wizard101 site.
- Keep at least 15–20 GB free storage whenever possible.
- Consider adding cloud storage or external storage for non-game files.
Bottom line
Yes, it will probably run Wizard101.No, I do not think that HP Stream is an especially good value at roughly $388.
At that price, I would strongly prefer a laptop with:
- a better processor
- 256 GB SSD
- regular Windows 11 Home if possible
If you want, I can help you do the next step properly: I can look up 2 or 3 better Windows 11 laptops in your budget that should handle Wizard101 more comfortably.

I appreciate your detailed response. I am curious as to how you arrived at the "64 GB of storage." The specifications show "Solid State drive capacity: 160 GB." I do agree that this product is probably not my best choice. I will appreciate your help in finding "2 or 3 better Windows 11 laptops" that fit my budget. Thank you.

You’re right to question that, CaesarWin26. If the listing you’re looking at says “Solid State drive capacity: 160 GB,” then that is what I would go by for that exact seller page. My earlier 64 GB figure came from looking at other HP Stream 14 listings/spec sheets for very similar Celeron N4120 models, which often show 64 GB storage. In other words, I likely crossed details from a similar-but-not-identical configuration, and that was my mistake. Thanks for catching it. with HP Stream listings
Budget laptop listings are often messy because sellers mix:
And if a laptop comes with Windows 11 in S mode, Microsoft says you can switch out of S mode, but it is permanent.
If you want, reply with:
Budget laptop listings are often messy because sellers mix:
- the base laptop specs
- bundled extras like a 32 GB USB drive
- generic “SSD” wording
- and sometimes a model family that exists in several storage versions
- Is it a true internal SSD?
- Is it 64 GB internal storage + 96 GB card/bundle?
- Is it 128 GB + 32 GB accessory rounded oddly?
- Is the listing simply inaccurate?
On Wizard101 itself
Your overall plan is sound. Wizard101 is officially offered as a Windows download from KingsIsle, so a normal Windows 11 laptop outside S mode should handle installation the standard way.And if a laptop comes with Windows 11 in S mode, Microsoft says you can switch out of S mode, but it is permanent.
What I would look for instead
For this use case, I would aim for:- 8 GB RAM minimum
- 256 GB SSD minimum
- Intel Core i3 / Core 3, AMD Ryzen 3, or better
- Windows 11 Home
- 1920×1080 display if possible
2 or 3 better laptop types to shop for
Rather than locking you to one exact listing that may change by the day, I’d target these classes of laptops:1. Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 / IdeaPad 3
Look for a configuration with:- Intel Core i3-N305 or better
- 8 GB RAM
- 256 GB SSD
2. Acer Aspire 3
This is usually one of the safest “budget but usable” choices if the specs are right. Look for:- Ryzen 3 7320U or Core i3
- 8 GB RAM
- 256 GB SSD
3. ASUS VivoBook 14 or 15
These are often good when found on sale. Try for:- Ryzen 3 / Core i3 or better
- 8 GB RAM
- 256 GB SSD minimum
My practical buying advice
If your budget is roughly $350 to $450, I would do this:- Skip the HP Stream line unless the price is extremely low and the storage is clearly a true internal SSD.
- Search for:
Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 8GB 256GB Windows 11Acer Aspire 3 8GB 256GB Windows 11ASUS VivoBook 15 8GB 256GB Windows 11
- Avoid anything that says only:
- 64 GB
- eMMC
- Intel Celeron, unless the price is very low and expectations are modest
- Prefer listings sold directly by a major retailer if possible, not vague third-party bundles.
If you want my shortest recommendation
If you can find one in budget, I would rank them like this:- Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 / 3i with 8 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD
- Acer Aspire 3 with 8 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD
- ASUS VivoBook 14/15 with 8 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD
One more caution
Because prices and exact configurations change constantly, the same model name may have both a good version and a bad version. The important part is the actual spec sheet, not just “IdeaPad,” “Aspire,” or “VivoBook.”If you want, reply with:
- your maximum budget
- preferred screen size: 14" or 15.6"
- whether she needs a touchscreen
- and 2 or 3 links you’re considering

A 14" screen is quite sufficient for her use, but I would consider larger; she does not need a touchscreen. I'll look forward to reading your assessment of the three models you mentioned earlier. Thank you.

You’re welcome, CaesarWin26.
Given your preferences:
I found a Lenovo IdeaPad 3i 14" listing showing:
I found an Acer Aspire 3 14" listing showing:
If the Acer is clearly 14-inch, FHD, 8 GB, 256 GB, Windows 11 Home, I would place it very high on the list.
I found several VivoBook 14 variants, including:
If the listing says Windows 11 S, I would not reject it automatically, but I would prefer a non-S-mode machine first.
Given your preferences:
- 14-inch screen
- no touchscreen needed
- budget-conscious
- and mainly for Wizard101 plus normal everyday use
What I would prioritize
For her use, I would look for these minimum specs:- 8 GB RAM
- 256 GB SSD
- Full HD display (
1920 x 1080) if possible - Windows 11 Home
- A processor at least in the range of Intel Core i3 / Intel i3-N305 / AMD Ryzen 3
1. Lenovo IdeaPad 3 / Slim 3
My overall view
This is probably the safest all-around choice of the three if you find the right configuration.I found a Lenovo IdeaPad 3i 14" listing showing:
- Intel Core i5-1135G7
- 8 GB RAM
- 256 GB SSD
- Windows 11
Why I like it
- The Core i5-1135G7 is comfortably stronger than the low-end Celeron chips in many budget laptops.
- 8 GB RAM + 256 GB SSD is a much healthier setup for Windows 11.
- Lenovo’s IdeaPad line is generally a good “practical family laptop” choice.
Possible downsides
- Some IdeaPad listings are 15.6-inch, not 14-inch, so check carefully.
- Sellers sometimes reuse model names across weaker and stronger versions.
- Some Walmart listings are from marketplace sellers, so I would read the seller and return details carefully.
My verdict
Best overall choice if you find a 14-inch version with:- Core i3 or better
- 8 GB RAM
- 256 GB SSD
2. Acer Aspire 3
My overall view
This is probably the best value if the specs are right.I found an Acer Aspire 3 14" listing showing:
- 14" Full HD
- Intel i3-N305
- 8 GB memory
- 256 GB SSD
- Windows 11 Home
Why I like it
- It is the right 14-inch size for what you want.
- It has 8 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD, which is the right floor for a pleasant budget Windows 11 experience.
- The Full HD screen is better than the low-resolution panels often found on ultra-cheap laptops.
- Windows 11 Home means no special S-mode concern in that listing.
Possible downsides
- The i3-N305 is more of an efficient entry-level chip than a performance chip.
- Some Aspire 3 versions are excellent for the price; others are very stripped down.
- Again, seller quality matters.
My verdict
This is a very sensible budget pick for Wizard101 and general use.If the Acer is clearly 14-inch, FHD, 8 GB, 256 GB, Windows 11 Home, I would place it very high on the list.
3. ASUS VivoBook 14
My overall view
Potentially very good, but you need to watch the exact configuration carefully.I found several VivoBook 14 variants, including:
- Intel Core i3-1315U, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD
- a weaker older one with i3-1115G4
- and one listing with Windows 11 S, which I would avoid if possible unless the price is especially attractive.
Why I like it
- The better VivoBook configurations can offer very strong value.
- A VivoBook 14 with i3-1315U + 8 GB + 256 GB SSD is stronger than the HP Stream idea by a wide margin.
- ASUS often gives you a slim, nice-looking machine for the money.
Possible downsides
- The VivoBook family has a lot of mixed configurations.
- Some are great, some are older/cheaper trims with weaker screens or older processors.
- Some listings still show Windows 11 S, which means you’d need to switch out of S mode to install software outside the Store.
My verdict
If you find a VivoBook 14 with i3-1315U, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, and regular Windows 11 Home, it is a strong contender. If the listing says Windows 11 S, I would not reject it automatically, but I would prefer a non-S-mode machine first.
My ranking for your situation
1. Acer Aspire 3 14"
Best fit for your stated preferences:- 14-inch
- budget-friendly
- straightforward specs
- likely enough for Wizard101
2. Lenovo IdeaPad 3 / Slim 3
Possibly the best performer overall, especially if you get a Core i5 version, but you may need to hunt a bit more for the right 14-inch configuration.3. ASUS VivoBook 14
Could be excellent, but only if you avoid the weaker or S-mode versions and verify the exact model. My simple buying rule
If you are comparing listings, choose the one that has:- 14-inch Full HD
- 8 GB RAM
- 256 GB SSD
- Windows 11 Home
- Core i3-1315U, Core i5-1135G7, or i3-N305
- 64 GB
- eMMC
- Celeron
- HD only if a Full HD option is close in price
- unclear “bundle storage” language
About Wizard101 specifically
For Wizard101, these three laptop types should all be more appropriate than the HP Stream you first linked, assuming the specs above. The biggest improvement is not the game alone — it’s that the laptop should also feel more comfortable for:- Windows updates
- web browsing
- Office
- general day-to-day use
Bottom line
If you want my shortest recommendation:- First choice: Acer Aspire 3 14" with i3-N305, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, Windows 11 Home
- Second choice: Lenovo IdeaPad 3i 14" with 8 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD, especially if you find a Core i5 version
- Third choice: ASUS VivoBook 14, but only if it has 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, and regular Windows 11 Home rather than S mode
