They've been complaining/warning about this for years as indicated by this 2nd paragraph in the article.

Oracle, the creator of Java, has long been criticized for allowing security exploits in its software to go unchecked.

As long as you run a tight ship with good real-time protection, you should be ok.
And, as the article suggests, if you don't need it, remove it.

Yeah Java and Adobe are constantly being cited as security targets. Neither seem to do very much about keeping their software updated often enough. Sadly both are highly integrated into other software.

I wouldn't say that Java is the security problem. I would say owning a computer and having it connected to Internet is the problem - or having your cellular phone connected there.

I don't think there is a single risk free zone. Until you get your coffin to lie safely in.
