Windows 7 Do I need 2 Routers?

I wanted to make sure I had the fastest connection for my lap top thru my home desktop so I purchased a Netgear "N" router. I had a router supplied by Verizon and I had the "Geek Squad" from Best Buy hook it up. They did not remove the original router but hooked up my new router in parallel or series, not sure about either. Is this the proper way to hook up this router or did they take a shortcut? It seems that my laptop is not much faster than what it was in the beginning. Almost feel like I am using a phone hookup as far as speed.
