A user uses their My Documents on a NAS, so have a mapped drive ie: S:

I attempted to change Start - Documents - properties to s:\My documents, but Win 7 reported "unable to add because not indexed"

I later found Users\User\My Documents - properties - location to s:\My documents, however after rebooting the user mentioned that the documents werent there, from then I noticed the Locations tab in My documents properties has disappeared

A temp solution has been to put a shortcut to the Mapped drive - my documents on the Desktop

Thanks for all replies

Solution
It seems like you were trying to change the default location of the user's Documents folder on Windows 7 to a mapped network drive (S:\My Documents), but encountered some issues. Here's a breakdown of what might have happened and some additional steps you can take:
  1. Unable to Add Because Not Indexed:
    • When you attempted to change the location of the Documents folder to the mapped network drive (S:\My Documents) under Start > Documents properties, you received an error stating it was unable to add because it was not indexed. This error typically occurs when Windows Search (indexing) is disabled or unable to index the network location properly.

    []Changing Location under Users\User\My Documents:
    • You then tried to change the location to S:\My Documents by going to Users\User\My Documents properties. This method is preferable as it directly changes the folder's location setting. However, after rebooting, the user mentioned that the documents weren't there, indicating that the change might not have been successful.

    ]Disappearance of the Locations Tab:
    • You mentioned that the Locations tab in My Documents properties disappeared after the initial attempts to change the folder location. This behavior could be due to certain settings or configurations conflicting with the location change.
    []Temporary Shortcut Solution:
    • To provide the user with access to their documents on the mapped network drive, you resorted to creating a shortcut to the Mapped drive - My Documents on the Desktop. This is a good temporary solution to ensure access to the files.

      Additional Steps to Try:

    • Recreating the Shortcut:
    • Verify that the shortcut to the mapped drive is correctly pointing to the desired location (S:\My Documents).
  • Resetting Folder Location:
    • You can try resetting the Documents folder location back to the default location or a local folder on the user's computer to troubleshoot any issues with the network location.
    [
  • ]Check Network Permissions:
    • Ensure that the user has the necessary permissions to access and write to the network location (S:\My Documents).
  • Check Indexing Settings:
    • Verify that the network location is allowed for indexing in Windows Search settings. You may need to enable indexing for the mapped drive. By following these steps and ensuring that the necessary configurations are set correctly, you should be able to resolve the issue with the user's Documents folder location on the NAS. If the issue persists, further troubleshooting may be required.
