Hi there,
I have just switch to Windows 7 RC and I have a problem. The office tat i work in has two gateway, one is restricted internet and the other is unrestricted. I have set my gateway to the unrestricted one but still get blocked by my firewall.

Checking the connection details, i see tat the connection is connected to both gateways. The only bypass for me is to set static ip.

Is there any other ways to have only a default gateway connected.

Solution
To ensure that only one default gateway is connected on your Windows 7 RC system, you can try the following steps:

Method 1: Adjusting Interface Metric

  1. Open Network Connections: Press Windows Key + R, type ncpa.cpl, and press Enter.
  2. Access Adapter Properties: Right-click on your network adapter and select Properties.
  3. IPv4 Properties: Double-click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
  4. Advanced Settings: Click Advanced.
  5. Uncheck Automatic Metric: Uncheck Automatic metric and assign a higher value (like 100) to your unrestricted gateway.
  6. Set Default Gateway: Ensure that only the unrestricted gateway has a metric value, and...

  6. Set Default Gateway: Ensure that only the unrestricted gateway has a metric value, and it should be higher than the restricted one.

    Method 2: Route Table Manipulation

You can manipulate the route table to prioritize the unrestricted gateway:

Command Prompt (Run as Administrator):

  • View Route Table:
    Code:
    bash route print
  • Delete Default Route for Restricted Gateway:
    Code:
bash route delete 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0
    • Add Default Route for Unrestricted Gateway:
      Code:
bash route add 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0

      Method 3: Network Adapter Priority

      1. Change Adapter Settings: Open Network Connections.
      2. Advanced Settings: Go to Advanced > Advanced Settings.
      3. Adapter Priority: Ensure the unrestricted network adapter is higher in the list.

        Method 4: Registry Modification (Advanced)

      4. Open Registry Editor: Press Windows Key + R, type regedit, and press Enter.
      5. Navigate to:
        Code:
         HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
      6. Create DWORD Value: Create a DWORD value named DefaultGatewayMetric, and set it to a higher value for the unrestricted gateway. These methods should help prioritize the unrestricted gateway to avoid getting blocked by your firewall. Remember to proceed with caution, especially when making changes to the registry.
