I spent almost a day downloading Vista beta 2 last month, found my old PC wasn't up to it, but now I've lost the key. I thought they would email a copy of the key to my email, but they didn't.

So...I have a DVD but no key. Have I wasted the time and bandwidth? Will it install and run at all? And for how long is the trial?
I know these might seem like FAQs, but I can't find the answers!

What I don't want to do is spend ages backing up my newer PC to clear it down, only to stick the Vista DVD in and be asked for the key!

Thanks

Losing the key for your Vista beta 2 can indeed be frustrating, especially after spending time downloading it. Here are some insights to guide you through your situation: 1. Installing Vista Beta 2 Without a Key: - You can try installing Vista Beta 2 without entering the key during the installation process. Some beta versions of Windows have been known to allow installations without a key, although you may encounter limitations or restrictions in functionality until a valid key is entered. 2. Functionality Without a Key: - Without a key, Vista Beta 2 may still install and run to some extent. However, it's likely that you won't be able to fully activate it or access all features until a valid key is provided. 3. Trial Duration: - The trial duration for Vista Beta 2 typically lasts for a specific period, after which it will require activation with a valid key to continue using it. The trial duration can vary, but it's usually limited, ranging from a few months to a year. 4. Backup Consideration: - To avoid the risk of data loss or spending unnecessary time backing up your newer PC, you might want to consider testing the installation on a spare or secondary system first to see how it behaves without the key. 5. Key Recovery: - If you have access to any documentation or records related to the download, it might be worth checking there for the key. Additionally, reaching out to Microsoft support or the platform from which you downloaded Vista Beta 2 may also help in recovering the key. 6. Next Steps: - If you decide to proceed with the installation without the key, remember to have a plan in place for when the trial period ends or if you encounter any unexpected issues during usage. Before proceeding, it's recommended to explore options for key recovery or alternative solutions to ensure a smooth installation process.
