Windows 7 Frequent Blue Screens of Death During Online Gameplay

Sir Thursday

New Member
Hi guys,

I've recently started seeing fairly frequent BSODs, usually while playing games (usually League of Legends), although I've also seen it once during general web-browsing. I've done enough research to know that this must be some kind of driver error, but I've no idea how to analyse the crash dumps to identify which one it is.

My PC is a AMD Phenom II x4 with 8GB RAM and a Radeon HD 4890 graphics card. I use Avast! Antivirus. I've attached all the diags requested in the "How to ask" thread.

Any help would be appreciated :).

Cheers,

ST

Sir Thursday:
Hello and welcome to the forum.
Let's start with a few drivers that are a bit too old
ASACPI.sys 3/27/2005 update from here ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download P7P55D LE click "Utilities" scroll down to ATK0110 driver for WindowsXP/Vista/Win7 32&64-bit
hamachi.sys 2/19/2009 usually associated with Log Me In, update, or uninstall or rename.
GEARAspiWDM.sys 5/18/2009 possibly part of Itunes or something else update from this link
netr28ux.sys 5/24/2009 Wireless Network Adapter (Possibly Linksys with RaLink Chipset) update from here https://sites.google.com/site/linksysupdateddrivers/rt2870/driver/download
L1E62x64.sys 8/23/2009 Atheros Ethernet Adapter update from here Drivers for Atheros AR8121 and Windows 7
Let us know how you make out and if Blue Screens persist, zip and attach any more recent dump files to your next post

Hi Trouble,

Thanks for your swift response. I've upgraded all the drivers you suggest except the Atheros one (the download link you suggested gave me a zipped archive, but I'm unsure how best to go about installing the drivers contained within (there doesn't seem to be any kind of installer attached).

In any case, I will monitor my system (ie. play more games :)) and let you know if the problem persists.

Cheers,

Sir Thursday

Still seeing the BSODs :(. They are always proceeded by the image on screen distorting, if that's useful information.

Attached is another .zip file that contains the latest minidumps. As I mentioned in my previous post, I was unable to install the Atheros drivers...how likely is it that those are the problem?

Cheers,

ST

I suspect that your network devices are still involved and according to your latest dump files three of the five files that I suggested updating in my original post are still reflecting the same dates
hamachi.sys 2/19/2009 update, uninstall or rename to hamachi.OLD you can always rename back to hamachi.sys if it proves not to be at fault.

As far as installing driver files that are contained within zipped archives, first you have to extract them, I personally use a piece of software called 7zip, but you can use anyone you are comfortable with including the built in windows 7 extractor.
Once extracted you need to force the install by using device manager.
Locate the device you wish to update
Right click it and choose properties
Select the driver tab
click the update driver button
Browse my computer for driver software
Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer
Have disk button
Browse button
Use the Locate File dialog box to browse to the folder where you have downloaded and extracted the files to, in the case of the Atheros driver you'll be looking for netL1e64.inf (3/29/2010), double click it and OK and next until finished.
NOTE: To answer your other question
As I mentioned in my previous post, I was unable to install the Atheros drivers...how likely is it that those are the problem?
I would think, quite probable. Since your dump files are still reflecting problems with drivers and all your most recent dumps reflect "League of Lege" which I assume is the online game you are having issues with.... unless of course there is something inherently wrong with the game itself and you need some updates and patches to correct it, in which case I might suggest checking their forum boards and see if there are any other players with similar issues. But if it's happening with other online games as well, then it's still likely a driver issue.

Randy

Hi Randy,

I've uninstalled Hamachi and updated the Atheros driver by following your instructions.

I thought I'd installed the Ralink driver previously. Tried it again and it does seem like it installs a driver, but I'm not sure that it is the right one. According to the link you provided, I should be seeing version 3.02.01.0000, but instead I'm seeing 3.00.01.0000. This is still an upgrade over the existing driver, which was 3.00.00.0060. Anyway, hopefully it won't be a problem and the ones I've installed will fix things.

Thanks again for all your help!

Are you actually using that wireless device for game play?
Looks like an Edimax USB device, but the driver suggested Linksys with a RaLink chipset. Do you have the specifics for that adapter. We might be able to help find the exact one with some detail regarding the Manufacturer Name, Model Name, Model Number and Revision Number (if applicable)

Hi Randy,

It's taken me a while, but I've finally managed to get the Edimax driver up to V3.2.1. Unfortunately, the problem still persists. In the mean time, I've tried a few different approaches to solve the problem.

- Ran memtest86 to see if there was any memory corruption leading to driver problems. Didn't turn up anything.
- Tried playing various games that aren't especially internet intensive. Still saw BSODs when running these programs, which makes me think it's less likely to be the Wireless driver.
- Upgraded Graphics Card Driver, Audio Driver, Keyboard and Mouse Drivers. No luck.
- Tried reinstalling Windows 7. No luck.

Attached are the most recent crash dumps. Any ideas?

Cheers,

ST

Looks like we are still looking at a driver
Code:
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (d1)
An attempt was made to access a pageable (or completely invalid) address at an
interrupt request level (IRQL) that is too high. This is usually
caused by drivers using improper addresses.
and
Code:
KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (1e)
This is a very common bugcheck. Usually the exception address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem.
And I'm particularly concerned about this one
AtiHdmi.sys 6/5/2009 which would seem to pre-date Windows 7 RTM by 4 months or so.
As best as I can determine the resource here ATI Catalyst and the release notes here http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/AMDCatalystSoftwareSuiteVersion1111.aspx would indicate that it is the most recent for your ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series
Additionally it looks like your new install still needs Service Pack 1, and have you check with the Mainboard manufacturer's website to see if the have something newer than 2009 for a BIOS update for your board.
Keep us posted.

Additionally one of the other staff members here on the forum has suggested that, if you have issues updating from the link I provided above that you might try the ATI HDMI Audio Device driver R2.64 2011/9/2 located here Realtek
He reports having had some luck with that one.
Thanks to Elmer for the suggestion.

The reason for the out of date Graphics Card drivers is that I initially bought this system with Windows Vista and a Free Upgrade Option to Windows 7 when it was released. I guess I must have gone with a graphics card they retired before W7 came out :(.

I found a slightly more recent version of the BIOS for the motherboard, so I'll give that a try tomorrow. I've also installed the Realtek drivers you suggest, but haven't had a chance to see if that helps yet. Will keep you informed!

Random aside: I've been having some trouble installing SP1. This is both surprising and annoying, since I definitely managed to successfully apply it before I did my reinstall. Have tried switching off my anti-virus first, to no avail. Guess I'll try out the Readiness tool from the Microsoft website next, unless you have any better suggestions...

Thanks again for your help,
